Hi All

I am looking to replace a very old I7 laptop with a desktop with the main purposes being to play games stream sports TV. My laptop currently overheats and runs quite loud so ideally looking for something that covers the following:
- Would meet/surpass the recommended spec of Planet Coaster (i7-4770/FX-8350, GTX 980 (4GB) / R9 380 (4GB) with 12GB RAM) but will also be used for Rocket League, Football Manager and CK2 / EU4
- VR not required, but if the system can handle it for not much more £££ then that would be good to see
- Runs relatively quietly
- Unlikely to suffer from overheating even when running games (above) and video content simultaneously
- Can get pre-built from Overclockers (been many years since I built a system)
- For OS I will run W10 (not required as I already have it covered)
- Budget is pretty open, more looking for value for money
- A new monitor would be nice too, as well as mouse (tracking wheel not great on old one anymore)

I have done some reading and get lost in the real tech debates of SSD v M2, Intel v AMD etc. so really hoping to get some honest advice from you guys/girls which takes into consideration what I intend to use it for. Every time I run a config I must over spec as it starts adding zeroes on the end!! haha

Hope you can help

Rob

Thanks Tamzzy, looks good cheers

A few of potentially daft questions if I may...
- The build says it is not VR ready (which is fine), but what bit is missing to make it VR ready? (is it a simple as that? not after a new build just would be nice to understand)
- With the RAM, does this only offer 2 slots? I.e. to upgrade later on would I need to rip and replace or can I add more RAM simply by buying more and fitting it?
- I have read somewhere that GPU are expensive at the moment, in your opinion would it be foolish to go for a 1050Ti 4GB and save £150 (with the intention to upgrade to 1070/1080 if prices come down)?
- Looks like a nice monitor and a good price. Would I be able to bother you for a suggestion/recommendation for a larger 27"/28" monitor please? (I may get both)

Cheers

Rob

the build before tweaks had the ryzen 1400 - this processor isn't VR-ready.
the ryzen 1600 + 1060 6gb in the tweaked build is VR-ready

the asus prime-a in the build has 4 ram slots, so to upgrade to 32gb ram is as simple as dropping another 2x8gb sticks in

you could drop to the 1050ti, would be decent for 1080p gaming - but depends if you *will definitely* upgrade in the future or not. if still umming-and-ahhing, i'd say get what you can afford now, and you can still umm and aah later on.

if you want a 27/28" monitor, ideally should be looking at 1440p. the pixel size of 1080p on a 27/28" monitor is quite large

Is option to send a list to OCUK and ask to build, not sure what charge on top is to build and with warranty , might be £200..

And a powerhouse , specially for 1440p gaming

    • Memory:Team Group Vulcan T-Force 16GB (2x8GB) DDR4 PC4-19200C14 2400MHz Dual Channel Kit - Grey (TLGD416G24
    • Graphics Card:Palit GeForce GTX 1070 Dual 8192MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card

32" VA 1440p 75hz monitor for £200

Thanks OrbitalWalsh

Ryzen build similar to the one Tamzzy suggests so guess with 2 of you suggesting very similar builds it would be a worth serious consideration.

I like the Intel option too, other than the GPU (from 1060 in Ryzen to 1070 in Intel) does it match or outperform the Ryzen suggestion ?

Cheers

Rob

I would take issue with the GTX 1060. It's worse than the GTX 980 - about 10% slower. You need a GTX 1070. And from what I've read, VR reprojection rates can be very high on the GTX 1060.

Orbitalwalsh, is this the monitor you were mentioning for £199 ?

https://www.overclockers.co.uk/aoc-...reesync-widescreen-led-monitor-mo-04g-ao.html

If so, what is wrong with it? an April fool they forgot to remove? haha seriously though it seems underpriced, am I missing something?

Cheers

is indeed £200 - mainly for AMD cards but nothing stopping nvidia cards using it - though i think my friend was limited to 60hz at 1440p which is fine for a gtx 1070.

and as above, gtx 1070 for VR! specially with newer units coming out! VR is the only time i'd spec GTX 1080 over GTX 1070Ti due to texture/pixel fill rate

with te pre-build it uses a "budget" Kolink branded unit- their rep is now on here to defend the unit and hopefully is going to get it reviewed by a 3rd part- OCUK also trust the unit in their budget builds .
most of use spec slightly better units all around but does add to the price

trying to shoe horn a gtx 1070 into ryzen 5 1600 build - again need to add up to £200 i think for OCUK to build

My basket at Overclockers UK:
Total: £1,054.87 (includes shipping: £0.00)

stock cooler is fine for 3.7ghz overclock across all cores which is recommended , again OCUK can do this
had to drop to 8GB - which should be fine for the time being but 16GB is now getting to the perfect gamers point

Thanks Orbitalwalsh

I think I am getting a little confused again. Based on what has gone before, I guess we're all agreed that I need to go 1070 rather than 1060, so thanks, I am comfortable with that now. With the exception of PCU and RAM the rest seems to be consistent (i.e. SSD, HDD, PSU etc.)

The AMD Ryzen 5 3.6GHz with 16GB 3000MHz RAM comes to £1,300 inc. W10 and OCUK build time.... and ... The Intel i5-8400 2.8GHz with 16GB 2400MHz RAM comes to £1,150 inc. W10 but exc. OCUK build time. So all-in-all, these could be roughly the same price but possibly £50-£100 more for the Intel option. Therefore, based on my original requirements, which would I be better off with please ?

2 other quick questions too...
- If Intel, would it be worth going to i5-8600K for an extra £60?
- i5 can support 2666MHz RAM But I am assuming, as no-one has mentioned it, that it isn't worth worrying about the difference from 2400MHz. correct?

Thanks again,

Rob

@Geordie1881

I just sec gtx 1070 because I could for the budget . If you can why not :) at 1080p it will last longer , or it can drive 1080p 144hz monitors for £150-200 or 1440p 60hz monitors nicely as well . Depends on your playing style . RTS and RGB it's nice to have the higher pixel count were as fat FPS like RB6 or PUBG it's nice to have a high refresh rate

If you can afford to spend cash and clock the 8600k then yes, also need good cooling .

Not much difference with ram speed for gaming, so picked the cheapest , ryzen chips it's a little different

Thanks again, really appreciate it. Will speak to OCUK today to see about build costs. Appreciate the note about videos etc. but I'd like it done correctly and know my limitations hahaha

Cheers
