Looking for a PC build please

guess I got over excited with it all and put 1080 Ti - good spot. yes meant the 1070 Ti :D

Thanks for the advice again... down to 2 options then.

build one you'll need a 360 AIO if you intend to get OCUK to OC as high as it can get

is that a 360mm AIO cooler you refer to ? The only options appear to be 120mm and 140mm which is highlighted as being too large for the case. So do I need a different case?

Re Ryzen 7 the only thing that holds me back is the 3.0GHz with max turbo to 3.7GHz does that stack up to the i7-8700k which is 3.6GHz base and max boost to 4.7GHz or is this irrelevant when overclocking ?

Three issues:

I don't believe that you can overclock on that motherboard.
You should get the full-sized GPU.
Freesync only works with AMD GPUs.

Hi Quartz, thanks

Which motherboard are you referring to please? Also, is it the GTX 1070 Ti that is not full size? If so, what is the impact of that ?

Cheers

there B350 and Z370 chipsets... both should be fine with OC :)

would change for a case that can least handle a 240 AIO personally , unless your using a damn good £70 air cooler and most are just over 160mm in height

I don't upgrade that often (if at all)
i would get the 1700. better longevity.

also would be worth asking ocuk in the customer services section to build and warranty a custom spec for you.
might be slightly more expensive than off the shelf build. but you're then getting a known quality part. just my 2p

Thanks Tamzzy, so I could look at the pre-build and ask them to use different RAM '8Pack' as otherwise the kit list seems to be the same. With overclocking, what could I expect from the 1700 ?

ask them to use different RAM
yes

With overclocking, what could I expect from the 1700
if just sticking to the stock cooler, an extra 100mhz perhaps.
if using an aftermarket cooler, 200-300mhz depending on #siliconlottery

depends on how likely you are, to want to overclock. if you do, then better to get the 1800x with an aftermarket cooler

Thanks Tamzzy

So it looks like I have the option of the following coolers:
- Raijintek Themis Black CPU Cooler for Ryzen
- Raijintek Themis Red CPU Cooler for Ryzen (-£4.96)
- Alpenföhn Alpenfohn Brocken ECO CPU Cooler for Ryzen (+ £2.04)
- Alpenföhn Alpenfohn Matterhorn Black CPU Cooler Bundle for Ryzen (+ £23.04)
- Alpenföhn Alpenfohn Matterhorn White CPU Cooler Bundle for Ryzen (+ £23.04)
- Alpenföhn Alpenfohn Ben Nevis CPU Cooler - 120mm (- £8.95)
- Alpenföhn Alpenfohn Ben Nevis Advanced Black RGB CPU Cooler - 130mm (+ £4.01)
- Raijintek Aidos Red CPU Cooler for Ryzen (- £6.00)
- Raijintek Aidos Black CPU Cooler for Ryzen (- £4.96)
- Antec C40 Nickel-Plated Quad Heatpiped Direct Contact CPU Air Cooler (- £0.95)
- Cryorig H7 Single Tower Heatsink with 120mm Fan (+ £8.05)

Any of these sensible when moving to a Ryzen 7 1800X (potentially overclocked) with GTX 1070Ti and 16GB 3200MHz '8Pack Edition' RAM ? If not, is there a specific cooler you'd recommend ?

Cheers

Rob

The case will only take 160mm CPU cooler. Is that what the 240mm radiator refers to? or is that a different measure? The radiator rear is also 120mm...

I also like this case which appears to cover a 240mm radiator but not sure if I am thinking correctly

Or back to the Corsair which states 170mm CPU but 360mm radiator

no. the radiator fits on the fan mounts.
most cases have 2 fan mount side-by-side (120x2 = 240)
the 240mm rad will fit the kolink stronghold (or most other cases for that matter)

160mm that you're referring about is for standard heatsink/fan combinations and the max supported height.
irrelevant for aio coolers

Is that the Observatory one ? Tbh I'm quite happy with an unassuming case as it'll be relatively hidden anyway. thanks for the options as always though.

It's looking like £100 for OCUK to build and provide warranty so not looking too bad overall. Waiting on final quote from them though based on Tamzzy's spec about 30 mins ago

Sorry Tamzzy, only spotted this after my last post. I like this a lot, thanks. Just need to get the build price checked.

Cheers

You would be better off going with the R7 1700 and a better board imo for similar money, especially if you are going to overclock. Something like an Asus Prime X370 Pro. In fact you could even get the excellent ASRock Taichi board if you go with cheaper 3000MHz ram and a cheaper Team Group SSD.

can save £30 if you go for team group 480gb SSD :D

build looks solid!

found b350 and x370 boards to OC the same for Core- ram is a different story - but then would wait for ryzen 2600x and x470 to hit 3600hz plus but would add a good chunk of money on top :(

AMD missed a trick here, B350 chip set should have allowed X CPU chips to auto overclock and memory overclock - where as X470 has full control of CPU overclock and voltages etc .

b350 must have eaten into a lot of X370 sales
