Looking for bike advice £150 max.

2nd hand is the way to go with such a low budget. You can easily get something decent for £150 to be honest, but it all depends on where you live.

£150 won't get you a good new bike. Second hand you stand a much better chance.

This. Totally this. £150 will get you a Bike Shaped Object (BYO), second hand is the only reasonable option at this price point. You can at least half the cost of a new bike by buying a second hand bike that's a few years old :-)

For example, I picked up my Scott Sportster P3 2008 model for £80 in late 2010. It was at least £400 when it came out and has served me very very well.

Secondly... do regular cleaning and maintenance (oiling etc), that will save you a lot of grief and parts replacements.

the Giant ocr1 sounds the best of the bunch to my limited knowledge of bikes.

you might want to find out how much wear the rims have on them from the brakes and make sure you find out if any of the bearings need replacing , if the frame has any cracks or anything.

don't just blindly hand over £150 make sure the bike is in as good condition as he claims

Thanks for the advice :)

I think that is the trouble for a beginner and does not know what to look out for and could get ripped off easy :(

That one will most likely go over what I could pay anyways.

The Giant ocr1 went for £256 lol

That does look good cheers.
I have never ridden a bike without gears so would I find a fixed gear harder?

Thanks.

you'll have a choice between fixed/freewheel :)

the bikes comes with flip-flop rear hub so on one side you'll have a fixed COG on the other a freewheel.

the only difference is you can't change to a smaller/higher gear, but for city riding and commuting the setup that these come with - 18/46 or 18/48 gearing is perfectly fine. AND IMO better for a beginner because there's very little maintenance on a single speed and its cheap to replace if something goes poof.

in the future you can swap the freewheel at the back to a smaller 16t for e.g. which will allow you to go faster, or the front chainring to one with more teeth which will again increase the gear and allow you to get up to higher speeds - mind at lower speed/cadence it will be harder to pedal too.

with you budget IMO a single speed is the best bet! :) gears etc cost money and thats why a lot of these geared bikes come with rubbish groupsets that will fall apart in no time or give you problems thorough the ownership.

you would probably hate it

why would he hate it? its a single speed, simple no frills bike.. jump on and pedal nothing wrong with it.

fixed gear is something that a lot of people dislike but that particular bike allows you to have both.

How would a person stop a freewheel bike? does it come with breaks lol

I take it fixed wheel you used the pedals to brake?

Thanks.

yeah front and rear brakes its exactly the same as a geared bike but it has no gears.. :)

fixed uses pedals to brake but even then a lot of people ride with an extra front brake.

Thinking about I don't think a fixed gear be good for me if it means much more extra work as I will not be 100% in a 5 days after visiting the hospital lol

I think if I had to fall back on my backup option if nothing used was available I would go for this http://www.decathlon.co.uk/rockrider-50-men-id_8202062.html

It's the only one I can I see that is ok for a new bike if I can't get a used one and the ones I have seen on ebay went for to much or are to far away to even collect :(

Thanks.

its not a fixed gear jebus guys.. read on :)

it has a freewheel at the back which means you've got one GEAR and thats it, 18/46 gearing is dead easy IMO and everyone with a bit of muscle upgrade it, I can't see why that would cause you any issues.

it would be the best bike for the price unless you find a good 2nd hand one and tbh only good bike i've seen in this thread is this - http://www.decathlon.co.uk/nework-3-id_8222474.html

what you should get is one of those single speeds that are on gumtree..

http://www.gumtree.com/p/for-sale/c...-months-free-service/1025334997#photo-content

my brother got one for 180 a year or so ago and it's HEAVY but its strong and heck and the fact that its a SS it just does the job :)

i have some woods near me and they have a path but it's not exactly smooth as a road.

they can also get muddy and bumpy in a lot of places and i would need to be able to stop quickly should something or someone pop up from nowhere.

would this type of bike be suitable or would i need a "mountain" bike?
