Lose the M3?

Hi there

The new M3 is better in everyway, so get it done. Just try to get a good deal as depreciation could be a bad thing.....

I havent even been for a ride in the current one

If you can finalcailly afford it which by what your saying you can and the fact you will only use £600 in 6 months as you say then DO IT :D

I cannot quite remember the exact cost per year becuase I can't find the letter, but it's approximately £100 less than before, so about £700-£800 for the year. BUT...

Exhuasts are not covered. Certain suspension components are also not covered. And here is the worst bit..

Each claim has a £250 excess. So, if you need any warranty working doing, you pay the first £250...

Yeah, I know about the excess (mentioned it a few times :P ), that's actually what puts me off. I might have been prepared to pay however much the extended warranty would cost, however, I'm not prepared to pay the £250 excess. If I was unlucky enough to have 4 problems with it in a year then that's another £1k paid out. No thank you, I'd prefer that money remained in my bank. I get the feeling the excess has been applied solely to put people off claiming.

The whole thing is now regulated by the FSA, which apparently brings extra cost and hassle into the schemes. I am pretty sure BMW and VW, for example, have now contracted the warranty schemes out to an insurance provider, whereas before it wasn't an insurance based warranty.

Under FSA regulations, you can't legally do anything but contract it out to an insurance company. You also can't run a service that doesn't break even, and there are so many hoops the FSA expect everyone to jump through it's ridiculous....

The FSA are a nightmare organisation if you have to deal with them....

It sucks, one of the great things about BMW was the warranty on used cars was as good as it was on new cars - this is still the case with BMW Approved Used Cars but only for the first year of your ownership :(

Agreed.

What to do?

As much as I truely love the M3 an unexpected pay rise and another to come have thrown a bit more cash my way (not to mention clearing of a few bills)

With the tumble of e46 prices there are bargins to be had and the e46 is seriously growing on me dispite my previous reservations!!!

My mate wants my e36 M3 and I will only lose £600 on it after 6 months driving (3k miles) we will ignore the new tyres and other work that I have had done ;)

looking at 20-22k realisticaly, with the 19" alloy option as 18s look lost in those flared arches

Black is truely mean looking but the Pheonix yellow has strangely caught my eye.

Black

Vomit/dhiorea Yellow

What do peeps think, bit of a mad thought but a fun one, and no other car really jumps to mind for 20-22k

mmm newer M3 power goodness :D

As your already well & truky bitten by the ///M bug, I'd say go for it, and for £20 - £22k what would be a better way to go than down the e39 M5 route? - Many decent examples are well within this price range, but, as this months edition of "BMW Car Magazine " has just pointed out with one of there long term test cars, a "W" Reg example bought for £19,995 the running costs this month alone, are £3,697! over a mileage of 4550!, to quote the magazine
"You might want to reflect on all this if you are tempted by one of the 120k miler M5's appearing for under £15k"

For me, though, if I had a sizeable boost in income, I would'nt be deterred!

All of the above said, however, regardless of colour, an e46 M3 would equally be right up there in terms of desirability, driving fun, and it would be a difficult choice to make.

How I envy you mate for being in such a fortunate position to consider such cars, lucky man, I hope you carry on enjoying your M cars. :)

So, to sum it up, warranties are now like paying for insurance, twice?

the new BMW warranty stinks , £1050 a year with £250 a claim excess

lota of M3 owners have tken warranties with warranty direct , £550 a year , £25 excess but a £5000 claim limit , folks that have claimed so far have found them very good

the other downside to the BMW one is that if the car has at any point not been covered by BMW warranty then they will not take it on

re the E46 blue , the reason you don't see many Estoril blue ones is that was form the "individual paint" scheme and costs loads there is also Laguna Seca blue but we all know why you don't see many of those :p

hmm i must be the only one who actually prefers the e36 m3 over the e46 :/ but then i prefer the e30 over them all :P

Another 'do it' from me.

And it has to be in that dodgy yellow. I can't help it, I really like it in that colour.

You can't take spare cash to your grave - if it is spare - spend it, definately.

I do like M3's - looked at one before the DC5, yes I could afford to buy it - but no I don't think I could afford to run it so I backed off. Old shape ones are nice, but starting to look maybe a little dated now. Still nice on the eyes the old ones and obviously fantastic cars to drive, but against the new breed they're just totally outclassed.

There's only three cars that could make me part with my current car - M3, M5 and NSX.

Ha, i say do it aswell, only i cant comment on the colour cause the pics arnt working. Yellow sounds awsome though.
