Lost and Found

If it has ID then you can’t really take money with a clear conscience.

But if it was just loose cash or unidentifiable wallet then perhaps.

Just depends on the situation. If in a hotel lobby then you just hand it in regardless as the owner should be able to easily recover it.

If on the street then a bit more tricky, probably fair game.

- a guy walked away from a cash machine leaving about £250 in notes in Tottenham Court Road.

How is that even possible?

But what happened when I lost MY wallet in a pub which had cash in it? It got handed in... with the cash removed. **** other people.

That ^ is what most people would do IMO but most people won't admit it.

A scumbag might try to use your cards/access your bank account or even come to your house and burgle you or steal your car if keys were in the wallet with your address. That's what worried me the most when I lost my wallet. The money wasn't that important.

When I've found wallets in the past I've handed them in to the nearest police station. Or my manager on the couple of occasions I've found a wallet or whatever at work. No idea if there was money inside any of them because I didn't open them. Not my wallet, not my stuff. Not a difficult choice to make - I don't steal other people's stuff.

Are police stations still open? I have no idea. Maybe nowadays I'd open the wallet to look for contact details.

This is the correct answer.

It's absolutely not the correct answer.

Could you really live with yourself by pocketing a roll of money, knowing that someone was missing it and was possibly despairing?

That said, there are a couple of caveats here:

1. if it's a small amount of money, like £1 or £2, you're not going to hand that in anywhere, are you.
2. if also depends on one's personal circumstances. Let's say I was destitute and couldn't make the next month's rent, and then I found £1,000 in cash. Am I handing that in? **** no. Do I feel bad? A little, but for the rest of the month I'm thanking my lucky stars and thinking, "well, they didn't need it as much as me".

It's still not the right answer though ;)

I guess, to be fair, I'd mostly want my cards and driving license back.

I never really carry much cash: occasionally up to £100, but usually up to £20, so wouldn't be hugely bothered if that went missing and I got everything else returned.

500 quid? Mate get a better solution, only thing cash is for is dodging taxes.

When i was younger id probably have kept it. Now, probably not, ill tell you if i find one. :P

aged 15 i Found a pension book with money tucked in it, left on a bus, gave it to the driver. Probably zero chance that they saw that money again but what can you do but have faith.

Lost my wallet twice, been rinsed twice. £100 quid once and £40 another time. This was a good 20 years ago.

Dont even have a wallet now.

You're really not a very nice person, are you?

Actually, I'm a decent man in most ways but I'm ruthless when it comes to money and my own survival.

Nice? That's not a character trait I've ever aspired to.
"Nice" is something I look for in potential serious girlfriends/partners.

How is that even possible?

A delay in dispensing the money might do it. Someone might think that the transaction has failed and leave. Maybe.

You're just talking about different degrees of theft. Maybe most people are thieves who draw the line in the same place as you do, but IME working with the public for ~30 years that's not the case. It seems that the most common course of action is to hand the wallet (or purse or bag or whatever) to the nearest person the finder deems suitable. So random customer who finds it hands it to me, I hand it to my manager. Same idea for both of us - don't want to steal it, don't want to do anything more than the minimum to deal with it.

If I found a wallet with that sum of money in it I would 100% hand it in, id also take £20 out of it for my troubles and treat myself to a few beers for being an upstanding member of society.

The Mrs called me one morning to tell me that she'd found a purse at the (unattended) train station. She also went on to tell me that there was a small bag of Class A in the purse and that she was going to hand it in at the train station at the other end.

Told her to get rid asap as the police would just love to believe her "I found it" excuse if for any reason they had cause to speak to her, which, at the beginning of the first lockdown when the police were challenging every passenger on the trains, happened regularly.
