LOTRO free to play going ahead.

None, the game is dead. FYI Evernight is one of the better populated servers.

Withywindle was a recommended server for a good while, so it's population became the highest of the EU servers, but yeah, the game isn't doing well at all regardless of being on a highly populated server, you will only see a few people on your journey.

Snowbourn is the highest-populated EU server, and always has been. If you're starting afresh though, I couldn't recommend anything but Brandywine (US). It has ~3x the population of Snowbourn even at off-peak times. Warning though, there has been a mass influx of transfers to Brandy from all the other US servers, and though it's populated, the community is often less than welcoming.

Laurelin is pretty lively, as it's the old European RP server.

Not anymore if my once in a blue moon log in last night is anything to go by, in previously well populated parts of the game I never saw more than 3 or 4 people, the most being 4 in the Twenty-First hall Craft Hall.

Really sad how this game has died as the Laurelin community used to be one of the best MMORPG communities anywhere :(, still remember the day I wandered in to Bree and six guilds were having a mass relay race around the south fields with <Level 4 alts. and loads of other guilds had lined the start and finish to cheer :)

I've been trying to find up to date server stats actually, but not having much luck. Bree is still full of RPer's on Laurelin, but I think the addition of new zones (about to go all the way up to 100) has people spread out all over the place. The 21st hall is just another stop on the way now, no longer the high level hub it used to be.

I went through pretty much every zone "hotspot" on the main routes to the Rohan content and the Twenty-First Hall was the busiest place of the lot of them, couldn't believe how quiet the global chat was as well.

Laurelin is dead. The community has been transferring to Snowbourne for a long time now and that is really the only server left that is truely busy.

That's why I've been looking for stats - according to this thread, Snowbourne, Withywindle, Evernight and Brandywine are all the the busiest servers :)

I know for a fact Evernight is a tomb, I stopped levelling on it because it was so empty

There are too many servers - they need to fix that it seems to stand a chance of keeping the game alive. I tried logging into Withywindle last night, and in the starter area of Bree I was the only person.

Shame really, because i transferred from Snowbourn to Withy due to it being more populated in the starter zones before Easter, as well as Bree, Low Lands and North Downs.

Guess if i want a populated server again, i'd need to transfer back to Snowbourn, but i must admit, Snowbourn PvP is/was awesome.

I only looked at the initial (semi-instanced) area, but it wasn't a good sign that I was the only person there. I did the same on Snowbourn earlier and there were 6-7 people.

I have been thinking about giving this a go to see the content in the last two expansions. I have played up to Isengard but stopped before Rohan and Helms Deep came out.

I remember there used to be all sorts of deals with expansions to buy them and the previous content. It seems that Helms Deep is $40 I think - do I need to buy Rohan as well? Is it worth playing still?

There was a recent deal on Helm's Deep (50% off I think) that included enough Turbine points to cover its cost. You can buy the expansions in game with points as well.

As far as I know you don't need the expansion packs to go through the areas, just to do the non-story quests and get any of the extras.

Helm's Deep got poor reviews didn't it? I've never got anywhere near as far as that in the game so haven't experienced it.

One way to save money for buying stuff with points is buy the Mithril boxed edition for £12. It includes 2,000 points (worth £20ish) and includes a permanent mount on all characters, as well as several quest packs.

I started a character on Gladden, since this has been the default server for new players for a while. It's certainly a lot busier, but the game world is so large it still feels a bit empty.

My highest toon is only 74, so I've no idea yet. Been dragging myself through Isengard, which is only ok so far. I think the 'big battles' feature of Helm's Deep turned out to be a bit of a flop though.

Let's hope there will be more content coming. They did recently revamp some of the lower level area quests, which is nice. Most games just abandon it all together. I also like the fact that if you subscribe and play a couple of chars you can fairly easily get enough credits in game to buy all the expansions without spending anything extra.

I'd have thought with the franchise being so massive they'd have relaunched the game somewhat, with an updated engine, better graphics, etc.

Helms deep has been on offer a few times it seems to alternate so if it was cash this time it will be TP next offer.
I had the tripple pack for £20 so i got Moria , Isengard and Mirkwood.Got the Mithril edition for just over £11 and with the TP i have saved got Helms Deep whilst it was on offer
