Luggage

Go to a military surplus shop, buy a tank tool bag for a tenner and fill it with clothes.

Anything else carry it on the plane in a rucksack.

Though a tank tool bag probably wouldn't be an issue unless it was in patterned camo if you travel a lot there are some parts of the world where military or military style clothing and equipment is prohibited (including quite a few tropical islands and similar).

As I alluded to my in my post I'm considering that as well - if it's very inexpensive the fact it goes in the bin after the trip isn't a hardship. Just not sure which the right approach is.

Years ago it wasn't worth going cheap as the goods never actually did the job but these days cheap just means cheap. With a cheap option it can be slung anywhere & who cares what shape it comes back in after the baggage handlers have had it.
It will be full of dirty smelly clothes on the way back anyways so why keep it.
Obvious bonus is it will look like you can barely afford a trip & won't be worth pinching or opening up to see what's in there.

I would say the complete opposite with the hand luggage though, Buy a bomb proof one & keep all your Goodys safe & to hand.

I use a Samsonite as my carry on. It's been used a lot and it holds out well. The extendable arm seems a little finicky at times, but other than that, its survived many a trip.

Should buy rubbish luggage that will just barely make the trip & back, Posh cases get targeted by thieves/Luggage sorters.

Providing nothing valuable is put inside them sure I guess otherwise...

Both me and the missus have £25 50 litre dunlop ones from sports direct, they've done in excess of 100k around various worldwide destinations without a hitch.

Eagle Creek cases are good. If you buy one that has the "No Matter What" lifetime guarantee then they will repair/replace it irrespective of how it is damaged. I have been using one for years and it still looks new.

I bought a large wheeled suitcase with extendible handle for £10(? certainly no more than £15) from Wilkinson about 7 years ago and it is still going strong, having done more than 20 international flights.

I have a hardshell Samsonite I use for long haul too, it must be over 15 years old now, still works fine.

Parents also have ancient fabric Antler ones that look brand new, they must have had them for at least 10 years and they holiday a lot with them.

Thought if I wanted new suitcase I would probably be stupid and buy those carbon fibre ones :(

My TravelPro luggage is virtually indestructible I think. Had them years (both cabin and hold pieces)
Looks professional and hold luggage puts up with getting damp quite often :D (dive gear on way home is always never quite dry)

I've always gone for wheel and handle less designs though as there is pretty much always a trolley you can grab, if not, generally speaking I can sling 23Kgs over my shoulder without too much difficulty anyway. This design also saves on weight which means I can get in more stuff :D

The closest thing I can find for mine (obviously old models not available any more)

I'm after a decent carry on sized bag and some nice stuff there, may have to get one.

As for hold luggage we've got a couple of Tripp cases that have done the job fine for the last 8 years or thereabouts.

Have used and abused a Dakine backpack for the last few years that's held up very well and reallty rateit, so would also look into their bigger stuff as well when it comes to replacing stuff.

Ive got loads of luggage built up over the years and unless you spend really cheap it lasts and lasts. I bought a mid sized suitcase 4 weeks back by Antler as I decided 24 hours before a flight that I had 1 bag to big and 1 bag to small, so needed a back quick and this was the only one I liked from a limited range. It was 120 quid and was incredibly light. Personally I think consideration should be hold bag and cabin bag that can be stacked on the hold bag. I think the 4 wheel ones are better in the main that 2 wheel ones, unless you get carpet when they can be pretty crap. My advice is don't spend silly money, it is wasted. Ive Tumi and The Bridge stuff so speak from experience of spending silly money! My cabin bag is a Samsonite Pro-DLX which really is superb.
