m eating wagyu steak while on benefits! should I feel bad?

Those statistics also state ‘main disabling condition’, so it's not always the only one on the form.

Well, that's rather self-evident, it's the main condition ergo there could be others but if they were more significant they'd be the main condition!

No need to feel bad at all. I’m on the same benefits and eat lots of expensive food like steak, lamb, fish, takeaways. I couldn’t care less what others think. If you’re permanently disabled you can often never work again. That shouldn’t condemn you to a life of living like a pauper. I look forward to my weekly M&S food delivery. The likes of Iceland and farm foods just don’t excite me at all when it comes to grub.
In 2023/24 the UK government is expected to spend approximately £258.4 billion in hand outs courtesy of the taxpayer.

The reality is, there’s only so many people in the engine room keeping the gravy train moving. If this trend continues the train will run out of gravy.

Yes, but simply stating a 45% success rate for anxiety doesn't tell the whole story. There could be numerous other factors on the claim form that overall are contributing to debilitating anxiety.

That’s the problem when this topic crops up, people think it’s just black and white.
It’s usually always more nuanced than that. Instead it gets made out there are loads of folk who are just experiencing a bit of anxiety claiming PIP.

It's worth pointing out regardless as people aren't aware you can, see one of the other replies calling it fake news, you didn't make it clear you were objecting to the amount as that's not specific to anxiety.

that website doesn't say that it gives a bunch of examples where you can get points for anxiety.

also it states

In its general classification of anxiety, the DWP includes:

  • Agoraphobia
  • Anxiety disorders – other/type not known
  • Generalised anxiety disorder
  • Panic disorder
  • Phobia – social
  • Phobia - specific
also the examples they give seem more like they are trying to rule out people with autism etc from being able to claim

like "Anxiety about social situations may lead to you avoiding them unless you are prompted by another person to engage."

for someone autistic it's not as simple as "anxiety" is it, but that's likely what they write on that part of the form, even if they got over the initial anxiety they don't know how to interact with people socially anyway, it's so uncomfortable and difficult, overwhelming etc they avoid it, its not ANXIETY, it's being unable to do something no matter how much you want it, someone prompting doesn't change that.
the people who do these assessments aren't even medically qualified to diagnose someone with the conditions they have, yet think they are qualified to make an assessment, a lot of the people doing it are only nurses. they don't have in-depth knowledge, if any when it comes to mental disabilities

I'm not convinced the main reason these people are claiming PIP is because of anxiety.

seems more like they took a bunch of data from answers, saw a lot of people list "anxiety" as reasons why they can't perform tasks" and decided it's solely an anxiety problem when in reality it's not.

anxiety will be the underlying issue brough on because of something else medically wrong with them.

I wanna know how many of these claims apparently won be anxiety have other valid medical conditions listed on the start of the form, they might have got a lot of points based on "anxiety" but that won't be the medical reason they decided to claim PIP

I'm not sure what you're trying to claim the website doesn't say - the quote in my post is literally text from the website.

I'm not really sure what any conspiracies about ruling out people with autism has to do with any of this.

it says "In 2023, there were 47,048 PIP claimants with anxiety listed as their main disabling condition."
They could just be writing the list of what's wrong with them in alphabetical order

as far as I'm aware the forms don't ask a main medical condition.

its now that doubtful someone would list in alphabetical order

Ok, so what’s your answer to solve the problem?
Well, I would focus on what people can do instead of just writing them off tbh. Because once you’re on benefits, it’s extremely difficult to get off them. Some people become comfortable and others become stuck.

The 16 hour work cap is a major barrier for those on benefits. So I would replace it with no limit on hours. But with the proviso that is limited for 1 year. Then in theory, you should be stand on your own 2 feet. :)

How much of that £258.4b is pensions (and pension related credits etc.) compared to UC, disability etc.?

His obvious solution is to gun down everyone claiming PIP with sharks with lasers.

I don't know the context behind this or how much the government actually gets from tax payers each year (could do with doing some research!) but this is sort of the same issue with democracy.

Eventually, the free loaders outweigh the tax payers and they will all have more of a vote than any of us and that's when the train runs out of gravy, rolls down a cliff and into the abyss. They're never going to vote in a government that will cut benefits to keep the country going!

You obviously don’t know much about disabled benefits do you. There is no limit to working or earnings on PIP. You can have a full time job and a £100k or more salary and you’ll still get it if entitled.

Sadly, it’s a situation that is really unable to be fixed now. No one has yet to come up with any good solution.

If you’re talking about benefit rates, how will cutting benefit rates help exactly?

we can't afford to take care of old people etc

but we can afford 11bn to fight overseas climate aid... so essentially they doubled our foreign aid budget that no one wants anyway..

there's a 20bllion black hole that could be filled, the hard choices are always the ones we have to bare... not the choices that wouldn't make a difference to the taxpaer, how many times has india told us they don't need our foreign aid?

how much we gave them anyway over the last 12 years since then? must be many billions.

also if you wanna get on about benefits why not go after the biggest benefit scroungers of them all? the companies who don't pay a living wage so the government has to subsidise them with in work benefits.

in work benefits is such a scam, no one with a job should be getting partial housing benefit etc make them pay a real wage why should the tax payer subsides their dividend payments?

oh we could means test it, made a profit your not eligible... pay your workers a real wage.
