Over the last week I've tested both a high-spec 135, and an M1.

135 had all the good stuff - sat nav, AV/USB, heated seats, etc. As did the 1M. 1M is supposed to be awesome right?

.....Now, coming from an M3, I think I was hard pressed to tell the difference *in driving* to the 1M and the 135? Sure there's probably technical differences - LSD etc... but really? In fact I'd be hard pressed to tell you what was faster out of all of them. 135/1M felt like they were working harder (hard to explain/quantify) but they were both massively rapid cars. M3 was more aggressive than both, but not massively so.

135 I had a go in the manual and the DCT - have to say I am loving the DCT....

So, sell me the extra 10-15k on the 1M? Looks better, drive was bit 'meh'. As in indiscernible from the 135.

So, choices, 1M, or a 135:

135:
:- Remove the badges, it's bland +
:- Has DCT +
:- Doesn't have 4 port exhaust -
:- Doesn't have cache of

1M
:- Sticks out quite badly as big and bad
:- No DCT - loved DCT
:- 4 x Exhaust - see point 1
:- Will get nicked

My brain and rational soul is telling me 135, yet my '**** you' part of my brain is saying 1M.

I'm not there.

Onions?

Additional info...(after a 32k insurance loss)

1M insurance = 2.6k
135 = 1.5k
M3 = 1.5k

The 1M needs to be a *lot* better, and I don't believe it is.

Guess I"m just checking I'm not mental.

Does the 135 come with an 'Msport' kit of any kind, so it looks like a 1M?

135 would be my choice, and pocket the change.

Well to be fair my choice would be a M3 or 335 E92.

Didn't like the 335. Nice car, but 'bland' felt like any other 3 series. We have a number of them in our pool and for the most part they feel similar, albeit the 335 quicker.

I immediately ruled out the 335 - great car, but just a fastish normal car.

Leaves new M3, 135 or 1M. New 3 series platform imminent, meaning E92 M3 will be 'old' platform....

Mind vodka full. I should wait for fox to tell me to buy a 5 series that I don't want in a colour I don't like and in a way that i'll feel I got a bargain

:playfulPleaseDontBeMean:.

Does it have to be a BMW? :p

If you have the disposable income, 1M then. If not, 135 not as if you can use all the power from a 1M unless your tracking so IMO will be more of a status symbol.

No, it doesn't have to be a BMW.

Considered Audi - mostly bland. RS4 for example...nice car, just 'meh'.

Guess I'm looking for guidance for a 30k budget fun car. Yes can stretch to a 1M (if I include finance), but not convinced it's worth the extra over the 135...having driven both, and with DCT.

My feelings are 135+DCT.

Why dont you go for a 2009 (59 plate) M3 with DCT? You can get them for £35k easily. Or do you not fancy another?
I'd go with a 135i if you liked the DCT that much.

Mate of mine owns the 1M.

He test rove the 135i a while before taking the 1M and says its a completely different experience.

Great car and would settle for a 135i imo.... However, if DCT is your thing then get the 135i

Production of the current 1 series coupe is going to end soon, so I don't see how it's any less obsolete than the E92?
