M1 accident

shouldn't be driving at that age, totally irresponsible of him

the government has gone the wrong way on this - the elderly ought to have annual tests when they hit 70 and should be strongly encouraged to stop by the time they're 80...

Although in an ideal world I would agree with you, I am interested in what your view will be in around 50 years time...

I think I would have probably forgotten about this in 50 years time tbh either because I won't be gracing this world anymore or the fact that I'll be old and losing the plot. Which at 30 years old I am slowly beginning to do.

they'll have changed of course, self driving cars can manage to go down the correct lane already let alone in 50 years time when everyone will have access to one

Confirmed it was the old man driving the wrong way.

BBC said:
An 87-year-old motorist who died in a crash on the M1 had been driving the wrong way, it has been confirmed.

He had been at the wheel of a Mazda Premacy when it collided with a Ford Transit van near Kegworth in Leicestershire.

A 27-year-old man travelling in the van was also killed in Monday morning's crash.

Highways England said the car was heading north on the southbound carriageway before the collision.

This morning a Turkish articulated lorry in the right hand lane (three lanes) at a roundabout decided to turn left, cutting across two lanes of traffic. I nearly crapped myself. Luckily I saw his indicators but the people in the left hand land had to slam the breaks on.

There really does need to be something done about older drivers. Either a retest every couple of years or a cut off age where you have to hand your licence over. The village where I live tends to have lot's of retired couples around the fringes and the things you see in the village regarding driving and parking are shocking. The number of times we get stuck behind some old fart going extremely slow is ridiculous. Last Friday we went to Elgin (17 miles) to do the weekly shop. The road is mostly 60 mph with 30mph or 50mph through the villages. We got around a mile into the journey and came up behind a huge tailback of traffic doing 35mph. We presumed it was due to the usual tractor but after a long straight with a right hander at the end we saw it was a Honda Jazz. People were doing some extremely dodgy overtakes as this idiot just would not pull over to let anybody through but as some people got past he had quite a few lorries behind him who could not get past due to the lack of overtaking places so that was that and we were stuck at 25-35mph all the way to Elgin. As it happened he ended up going to Asda which is where we were going. After we parked up we saw him getting out of his car and he had to be well in his 80's. To my mind if someone does not feel comfortable going faster than that then it's time to stop driving. It just causes frustration which then can cause a serious accident.

I agree pasty, something needs to be done about this old people on the road who are a danger to everyone else around them.

(some) old fokes dont like going fast. After my parents took my grandfathers car away, myself and my perents would ferry him around. He would start screaming and banging the dash if i approached 45 mph and would tell me I was going way too fast........

And under 25s males? They should be kept off the roads too by that logic.

As i have said before, for a few years after you have passed your test you should limited on bhp on the car you drive, still cant drive on motorways, a limit of one passenger and a curfew.

Then a secondary more in depth driving test should be taken and if you pass that then you can have no restrictions.

Would vastly reduce the number of accidents and deaths on uk roads.

Its mad that somebody like me could pass my test a week after my 17th birthday and then legally drive a ferrari on a motorway which I had never experienced.

Just managed to convince my 93 year old grandfather to part with his car. Really tough as he has lost a large part of his independence, but damn he was scary to see driving

I absolutely agree with this they do it to motorcyclists so why not cars.

Nearly lost my mum to a head on collision back in the late 80's new driver in his dads Cosworth showing off to his mates, lost it on a bend and hit my mum's car at approx 80mph, (40mph zone), according to the police.
