M1 Mac vs Ryzen 7?

Does not work with my Samsung G9 49” only get 3840x1080

i have ordered another cable, along with the two i have already tried to see if that works, if not refund Mr Cook!

apart from that its quite a snappy machine

EDIT: switch to 60hz and have it running at 5120x1440.....Although System prefs shows 3840x1080 but everywhere else 5120x1440 (low resolution)...not sure what that means but looks good to me

Bought one to test and returned within 3 days... the M1 doesnt really belong in desktops, its a far cry from having a 3700x or 3800x (or anything more). Im sure that for laptops its great mainly for the battery life, performance I dont think matters to the majority of people buying it as they just want something nippy to go on chrome and do basic stuff.

Unless you specifically require MacOS and their specific programs, then I wouldnt pick it over proper desktop. Also its funny how people do talk about the battery life a lot, but most people using their laptops are right next to a charger the majority of the time, so i think that point is a bit overhyped in general

Could be because these aren't desktop class chips.

But it handles high res video really well, and I can edit RAW files in Lightroom easily. I think you are down playing the M1 here.

It's not overhyped, the battery life is solid. You may feel it's not important, but that doesn't mean it's not a good by any metric.

The good old case of someone who hates a product, spends days on a forum spreading misinformation and is constantly proven wrong by reviews and users, suddenly disappears for a while, then comes back and says I bought it, it sucked, I returned it. All without any specifics. Lol.

Yeah ofc, but the mac mini is a desktop isnt it... Albeit a micro form factor, but its use is still as a desktop.

Yeah im not saying it doesnt handle editing and that stuff well, its just that if you dont do editing or that sort of work, then there's no real advantage for you getting it.

Im not saying the battery life isnt great (because its very very good on the M1), im just saying the majority of laptop users work at a desk where its easy to charge and battery life doesnt matter as much. Of course when it comes to times you're working on the go i.e public transport, then the battery life is fantastic and class leading. My point was just that most people whilst working on a laptop, are somewhere where they are no more than a few meters from a plug socket to charge their laptop anyway.

Where did I say I hated the mac mini? Its just not for me. I dont use editing software so any advantages there for me are gone (if there are any vs a proper desktop chip). Battery life makes no difference for the mac mini as its a desktop, and MacOS big sur is basically a glorified ipadOS which im not a fan of anyway.

Nothing interesting there for me, and would much rather carry on with my current AMD build which can do everything the mac mini does + a lot more.

Whats the issue here? Just giving you an opinion on it from someone who couldnt say anything about the battery life and the performance for regular use (i dont edit) is just whats to be expected?

Dont know why some people are acting like these are reinventing the wheel or something

Now you're just talking utter, utter nonsense. Go away, troll.

How can you not see that BigSur looks a lot iPadOS like vs previous macOS's?

Infact, its quite clear to see how iOS, ipadOS and macOS are actually very similar, and closer to each other than these OS's have ever been

There's always one or two. Just need to wait for v0n to pop in and say how terrible they are too.

People taking things massively out of context and damn right lying. Didnt say anywhere that they were bad, just being overhyped by certain individuals

With respect to music recording you say that yet more than ten years ago I was using a 12" Powerbook G4 for just that task (running Logic back in the eMagic days) which had two USB x1 and one Firewire400 port. In the 90s it was Atari's with 1MB ram running Cubase. Nowadays I have an iMac 27 with something akin to a 3570K and 8GB ram, itself fairly old as it's running 10.8.* and I don't yearn for more horsepower with plenty of software instruments running.

Mac mini is not a video editing or music recording machine. And M1 Mac Mini is even less so. It's a good first gen tech demo but it's too limited for any power user. M1 Mac Mini has a 16Gb physical memory limit, and practically no desktop-like connectivity - only two USB-C thunderbolts (with a limit of only one TB3 monitor and no EGPU support) and two USB-A ports capped at 5Gb/s.

I never really saw the use for a mac mini in all honesty, same goes for other micro desktop devices. Of you were at a desk and had space (which im sure almost everyone does) wouldnt you just get the full bigger version? In the case of apple, I would much rather have an imac or a macbook than a mac mini.

Its a low footprint machine that is great for people wanting to dip their toes into MacOS. It's primarily targeted at those wanting to pay less than an iMac and also already have their own screen/keyboard.

True, but if you wanted to dip your foot into MacOS wouldnt you start with a macbook? I guess each to their own but this is my point of view.

As far as CPU performance goes, the M1 is inbetween 4700U and 4800U for multicore, and is better than both in single core which is actually incredibly impressive! This is also a very fair comparison as all these are low power CPU's, with the M1 using even less power than the 2 Ryzen chips.

I do wonder if the 16" macbook pro is going to have maybe say 6 high performance cores and maybe 6 efficiency ones?. 50% more cores both HP and LP ones should be more than enough for it to destroy the previous 8 core intel version.

EDIT: Just seen a leak that points to a 16" Macbook Pro chip dubbed the M1X - 8 High performances cores and 4 efficiency ones.

Now THAT will be one to look forward to!
