M140i Shadow Edition

If the list price is over 40k you pay £500 a year in tax until the car is 5 years old. In the grand scheme of 40k cars it's not a lot but it is adding almost £50 to any monthly costs.
If the car is over £40k then you pay an extra £310 over whatever VED cost for your car - an extra £25.80 per month :) (for the first 5 years)

It's frankly astonishing this slipped under the radar. No one knows about it, it wasn't publicised at all. It makes no sense. I can only dream of a society where people recognise Joe Blogs in his 1.4 TDI doing 40k miles a year commuting causes more damage to the environment, air pollution, public health etc. than a petrolhead in a big engined car doing 5-10k miles a year. It really angers me...

It should all be done at the pumps and if I choose to drive a (6 cylinder in my case) or a V12 that emits more CO2 than all the other ubiquitous BS then I am more than happy to pay that on a PER LITRE consumed basis. I really despise this country.

Other than it was everywhere when they announced it, was discussed endlessly on forums up and down the country and matey just mentioned it in the post you quoted :p

The government get a fairly decent slice of money from each litre of fuel we buy, which directly taxes people who run inefficient cars or high mileage.

I've got a M235, love the thing and I do about 25k miles a year. There is no way I should use one for my kind of mileage but I love every minute of driving it so maths can go to pot for the moment :)

No idea what I'll get next! The thing about the *35 and *40 engine is that its so good at both ends of demand, frugal with fuel when needed and grin inducing good when you want.

Hope you get a fuel card! :p

I'd like to go that way but more likely going to step back/sideways and have a used 430d next... or maybe a M240

I'd have a look here;

Tony Lewis (TRL) does excellent deals.

I've ordered a Shadow Edition with the following spec;

£1800 deposit, 48M, paying a tad over £363

M140i Shadow Edition
ZNP Media package - Professional (Nav, online services etc)
674 Harman Kardon - Hi-Fi
544 Cruise control with brake function
507 Park Distance Control (PDC), rear
420 Sun protection glass
2TB Sport automatic transmission
2VF Adaptive M Sport suspension
3AG Reversing Assist camera
430 Exterior Mirrors - folding with anti-dazzle
494 Seat heating, front
4LU High-gloss black interior trim with Pearl chrome finisher

What mileage is that for?

Similar spec to my M135i, except I didn't get sun protection glass, reverse camera (I think it's overkill in such a small car) and I chose advanced audio...that's the only thing I wish I'd ordered differently (should have gone for the HK)

I do 30K / year in my M135i! Don't regret a moment of it and I agree completely with you about it being such a great engine.

I would love to go to an M3 next, but it's a HUGE jump in cost and I'm not sure I can justify it. Doesn't stop me from looking at AUC M3s every other week though! :D

7k off list at Coast2Coast, can probably do better through carwow too. These are residually strong cars so your loss would be rather less than 20k.

That said you can buy a well specced 2016 for under 25k which really would be the smart choice, virtually new.

Spoke to Tony at TRL. For my spec it worked out.

£38,445 OTR Discounted to £30,400 (21% discount), with a GFV of £14,460.

Totally torn between what to have, I really like the Golf, and have yet to drive the S3, which I assume is very similar to the R. I've missed the Q2 deals now, so will have to hope they are not too dissimilar in Q3. The max discount on the R for comparison was 13.8%.

I get the appeal of the S3 and a Golf R but I don't get why you'd have difficulty choosing between them and the M140i. It's such a different car, I mean yeah they're all hatchbacks but that's about it.

Do you want a four pot 4wd car or a 6 cylinder rwd car?

It's such a different car,

No, it's really not. They are all the same sort of car. Yes there are drivetrain differences but that's like saying an Audi A4 and a BMW 3 series are different types of car. They are not.

The M140 has aspects which are unique in class, sure, but it doesn't stop it being the same sort of car and it's only rational that people should decide between them.

Perhaps anecdotal but, people I know who are into cars - who we can safely assume is the majority of people looking at the halo/top tiers versions of a given particular model - know they want a specific type of engine, a specific drivetrain and specifically driven wheels.

The M140i really doesn't follow the typical hot hatch template at all, it's more of a GT car.

I knew I wanted a fast, rwd, 6cyl engine car and at the cheapest price point with some warranty in mind, hence I bought an M135i. The logical step for me was to consider the likes of an E46 M3, E92 335i, a V6 Alfa, 90's Japanese fare, Porsche Boxsters and to a lesser extent the likes of a GT86 or MX-5 (whilst, for me, being limited by their engines were discounted as options).

Whilst some of those could be considered sports cars and yeah, clearly, the M135i/M140i's are very much not, a Golf R or S3 was simply not on my radar when I was making that purchasing decision. I would assume a lot of M135i owners felt - at least in some way - similar to this.

An Audi A6 was simply not on my radar either but I'm not going to sit here with a straight face and pretend my ultimate driving machine is special and in a class of it's own because it drives the rear wheels not the front ones. For me that was absolutely part of the reason I picked my car but it doesn't mean it's a different type of car to the A6

The same applies to the 1 Series and the A3. Different takes on the same type of car.
