M140i Shadow Edition

For me that was absolutely part of the reason I picked my car

So why can't you understand that I don't see why someone would choose one over the other?

'Absolutely', as you correctly allude to, is the reason one would pick that setup over another setup.

Which is why I said;

It's such a different car, I mean yeah they're all hatchbacks but that's about it.

Do you want a four pot 4wd car or a 6 cylinder rwd car?

Don't think I was suggesting any layout is better, if I did I certainly didn't mean to come across in that way. It's all personal preference, I couldn't care less what folk prefer.

What I am saying, however, is that clearly the M140i is the outlier of the crowd and that much can't really be argued, it defies the majority of hot hatchery conventions, does it not?

It is a hot hatch... it's a hatchback with a decent engine... just because they made it right wheel drive instead of wrong wheel drive only makes it the best hot hatch... it doesn't change it into a GT car... that'd be the 6 (now 8) series ;)

Okay, I rescind the GT comment. I heard it on an Auto Trader review once and it has stuck with me. And, I'm not disputing any of your points crinkleshoes, I'm simply saying that the M140i is different to pretty much all of the other options in it's class.

And with that, you either know you want one, or you know you don't.

I totally get someone comparing the S3 to the Golf R, or the Megane RS to the Mk2 Focus RS etc. but the M140i to anything 'current hot hatch' is odd to me, it is - and I hate to use the phrase again - such an outlier to the rest.

And once again for clarity I wasn't suggesting any are better or worse, only what I prefer. I've still yet to have more fun on a roundabout than in my old Clio 200 :) but for ownership properties the M135i suits my requirements because, guess what, I wanted a rwd, 6cyl engine, not a 'hot hatch' specifically. Perhaps I'm the unconventional one? :D

Have to giggle that you wanted "not a hot hatch" and so you bought a hot hatch :D :D

I know what you mean... but to the average Joe, I think it'll easily be seen as competition for the others. It's only people who like driving who will pick apart the differences.

I'm looking at the M140i at the minute too... comparing it to Focus RS, 335d & S4.

Yeah, weird combo! I'm changing jobs and they all hit around the same price on a lease while getting acceptable fuel economy on the motorway cruise I'll be doing quite regularly. Never thought I would consider a Focus - but this new 4WD/RWD version has me at least curious.

I like the x35i/x40i engine... I also find it hard to think how anyone in the market for that size/shape car would actually go with something different... I'm only comparing because of what I've driven for the last 5+ years and fancy something different and brand new (never had a new car before). Although if you could get the 640d on personal lease for the same price as it is on company lease, I would probably be getting that...

How many motorway miles will be you travelling daily? I've recently took my M135i on a thousand mile round-trip to Scotland and back and it performed impressively well indeed (for a mini GT, hot hatch). I'd just make sure you get the adaptive suspension at the very least (as noted before in my earlier comments).

I SAID SPECIFICALLY! :p

I wanted a rwd, 6cyl engine with an automatic gearbox, something that looked good, had warranty and was relatively comfortable. The M135i came up and just so happened to be a hot hatch.

Up to 150 miles/day... nearly all motorway. So could be 3k a month if I was in the office every day.

There will be some working from home & client visits... but the office is 75 miles each way :/

It's worth it though... I've been appointed Technical Director and the company seem really nice. I'm chuffed with it because I didn't think that would happen for another 5-10 years or more :D

I found some decent low-mileage 535d/540i/640d/640i offers... but as soon as you bump up the mileage the price skyrockets so it's not worth it... the 520d is as cheap as the others I've mentioned - but I would hate that engine. Much rather go for the 1/3 series with the 6 cylinder engine. I'm also thinking about just buying a 2-4 year old 535/640.

7k off list at Coast2Coast, can probably do better through carwow too. These are residually strong cars so your loss would be rather less than 20k.

That said you can buy a well specced 2016 for under 25k which really would be the smart choice, virtually new.

I've got more then 7K off :). List is a tad over 38 and im paying just over 30K

Wait, I thought you were getting a new Porsche? Or was that someone else.

I was going after a GT3... finance said no, they didn't want to loan that much to someone without a house.

MD of the company I am now leaving stated he was going to get me an M4 as a company car... that didn't happen... I'm now starting a new job in 2 weeks :)

If you're looking for a well specced 14 plate 640d, mine will be for sale soon :)

Also like you I have become a Technical Director earlier than expected and getting a specced out 530e via work :)

Out of interest, how would you finance that? Genuine question.

I've looked at the Carwow (et al) route but I'm not sure how financing works. If you buy via a dealer on PCP then obviously they'll do all the residual value stuff and finance the difference easy as. If you're going via one of the discount sites though, how do you go about financing that?
