That would be becasue after sitting idle for a while the microkernel's memory manager decided to swap that to disk as to free memory for a running application when the running app requests it. Methinks there's not much that can be done about it other than install more memory.

thanks m8
running for awhile I mean not using parallels at all. then when I run it during that "time" it doesn't feel as nippy as when I first installed it. Is this due to memory as well?

cheers

Sounds like memory to me, parallels does use quite a bit and assuming you have 512mb RAM it does quite a bit of swapping between ram and disk which makes it sluggish. If in doubt install the dashboard widget: istatpro

My not so new mac mini. Second hand from MM. Runs like a charm :).

Christmas for the WIN!

Just about to format though, to reduce my installation size. Using a computer though has definitely become more fun!

One question though, where are the settings to change what the macbook does when you close the lid? To get it to display only on my screen, I have to boot it, then close the lid before it gets to the mac os x loading screen!

If I am working on my lap then switch over to the monitor and I close the lid, it standby's!

Make sure it's plugged in with it's power supply, you can't run external monitors when on the battery (a bit stupid, but that's how it is!) :)

Somethings a bit awry then. I took out the power supply. It hibernated. I then opened the lid and it woke back up with both monitors on (Odd you can use an external on battery with lid open). I then put the power supply back in and close the lid and it still went onto standby!

Just puts it in to super-low power consumption mode, ready to resume where you left off rather than booting the OS again. It sleeps when you close the lid or choose sleep from the blue apple menu. Personally I never actually turn mine off, just put it to sleep.

Edit - If it's not plugged in to the power supply then sleeping overnight might use about 5% (?) of battery power.

If you want to switch from normal operation to external screen:

Plug in power, display, external keyboard, external mouse
Close the lid and it should sleep (see "breathing" white light on the front edge)
Press a key on the external keyboard to wake it for use in on the external screen only ("clam shell" mode).

Some very nice pics of the MacBook Pro 17" Laptop which is what I'll be buying next month when I get my next installment of student loan.

I use Mac's at Uni (Graphic Design) but I'm just abit worried I'll spent 1.6k on a Laptop and wont use it very much because it cant run all my windows programs.
