It's only the 20" screen but it's bigger than my old screen. That layout is new so it's the first time i'm connecting a laptop to a bigger display and so far i'm very happy. Means when i'm at uni I can have a big screen 'desktop' setup and then when I need to go home i'll just take the laptop.

As for the laptop open, it's supposed to be in 'clam' mode when using with an external monitor, otherwise the output on the cinema display will be limited to 1280*800 rather than 1680*1050 if you keep the lid open.

The original pic in my sig is one of beyonce in a rolling stones magazine shoot.

Is the laptop still at full performance then when its in calm mode? I can't decide if I should get a cheaper mini or get a macbook and sell my sony vaio!

I would deffo want to connect the mac book to my 20" monitor like you!

Great sig ;)

I don't see why the performance would be lower...it does have to be connected to the power though, otherwise it will just fall into sleep. After using it for a while, the 20" is a lovely size. Although in a year or so I can see me upgrading to a 23" or 30":D

Quick question Gurdas, Is it possible to alter the res to use on a HD LCD?

And the DVI connector . . I'd assume it'll be fine to use a DVI > HDMI lead?

I can set the cinema display to anything I choose, although the maximum it will get to with the macbook in non-clam mode is 1280x800.

The dvi > hdmi should be fine as they are essentially the same connection, i'd check with apple though to be certain.

I'm doing it now

*moves mouse across screens*

Yes, you can have different resolutions but you can't use the maximum resolution of 1680 x 1050 when you are in 'mirror' or extended desktop mode, the lid has to be closed.

i'll post pictures when i clean my desk, dont want to spoil the minimilist mac looks :)

and nobody is using the sexiest mac of all time? (the first gen flat screen imac on the swing arm with the round base)

The best looking Macs are the G4 Cubes (which can be modded to use a ITX P-M board aparentely).

Can you lot not use the output hack to enable full resolution support for external monitors?
I used some software hack on my iBook G4 to enable that functionality ages ago.

The MacBook specs page says:

Extended desktop and video mirroring: Simultaneously supports full native resolution on the built-in display and up to 1920 x 1200 pixels on an external display, both at millions of colors
