The new 13" models only have 7hrs battery life as well. Boy oh boy am I glad I bought my 2.4Ghz 13" MBP with 10hr battery life when I did...
Indeed. If you read their new site though, it's ok though because the £1k Macbook Pro can manage to play *gasp* DVDs...
What a crock.The 15" also starts from £1550 and the base model only comes with a Radeon 6490 which is barely a step up from the 330m. So for a half decent spec with a Radeon 6750 your probably looking at around £1800!
How do Apple get away with it
Serious? The battery life is worse?
The quote has gone down from 10 hours to 7, but with the latest Macbook Air release they used more accurate tests that provide a more real life stat. You're more likely to reach the 7 hours now, through normal usage instead of stopping a few hours short.
I was worried that I'd been too hasty when I bought my 13" MBP earlier this month and considered sending it back and waiting until the new MBPs were released but I'm actually very happy that I bought it when I did, the new 13" is (for me) a downgrade! Very happy I've got the (claimed) extra 3hrs battery life and superior graphics.
I'd have been kicking myself if they released the new 13" with a higher res screen, better graphics AND faster processors, though.

Glad I bought my MBP in late December now, I was worried that I would miss out on a big update...but looking at the new ones.....not much of an upgrade.
I doubt I'll use Thunderbolt, AMD graphics is no biggie.....and not much uses quad cores (from what I've read)

Oh, you'd like to compare it to whatever the budget £600 13" of choice is right now. Go on then, don't let the whole apples and oranges thing get in the way, they're both fruit I guess...

Ok let's compare Apples to Apples...
Older generation 13": dedicated gfx, could play 1080p, 10hr battery.
New generation 13": onboard gfx, can play 'dvds', 7hr battery.
This isn't a downgrade, how? :-/ Sandybridge, yes. Usable for media even a 200 quid netbook can manage? Apparently not. For a grand, that blows!

Fact is last year you got:
Dual core CPU
Dedicated graphics
10 hours battery life
Same resolution
Now i know the CPU is better but im sure 90% of people would trade a slightly less CPU for a dedicated graphics card any day of the week.
Everyone knows Apple products are pure quality, but £1000 for integrated graphics is insane.

Doesn't make sense - the Sandy Bridge GPU is pretty much level pegging the 320m (faster in some respects most certainly) that the 13" previously had....

WOAH! Didnt realise that's what it did! (got confused to where the display port went for a second) that in its self is a very very cool step up.
Sandybridge in these things looks very attractive too, though everyone whining needs to remember these arnt designed to be gaming laptops really so the 13" with the capable hd3000 in it shouldn't be the end of the world (same for the low end ati card in the 15").
Pleased they have started to be more honest about the battery life too, on my 09 mpb (the first set with the massive batteries in the 15") iv never seen the quoted 7 hours battery life (think it was 7). Iv seen 3 hours of FM (when it was new, now its more 2) and I get about 4 hours of sensible usage, still a nice amount, but not the hopeful estimate given when I purchased it...

Look at the spec of the 6490, its actually a step down from the 330!!!
120 shaders, 64bit memory bus (is it confirmed DDR3 or 5?)
It will be more like the nvidia 325m
I also worry about the heat of a mbp with quad and ati 5750, my 2010 17" i5 & 330m puts out about 65w on load, I can only imagine these new mbp's will be more like 80-90w. Its going to sound like a hoover or its going to cook my testicles!
You do know that the pervious gen (well now it's previous since the new gen was released today) had integrated graphics as well right? The nvidia 310m is integrated into the motherboard chipset, the 13" has never had discrete graphics.
As for the battery life it's because Apple do more real world tests now rather than the light tests they used to do before. The battery life will be pretty much the same as before with the extra power from the higher CPU's. You can't tell me that you actually ever get 10 hours out of your 13" while it's in continuous use?
As for the DVD vs 1080p comment im not sure, but im sure there will be some tests and reviews come out over the next day or 2 as to what they can handle compared to the old ones, but im pretty sure the i5 is far more capable than the core 2 duo so you dont need to worry about that.
