Machine dead :(

Hi guys,

Just sitting around browsing the web when suddenly the PC locks up - everything is frozen.

So I hit the reset button.

Graphics card and CPU fan spin up to max speed and the machine doesn't post. Gets as far as code 90 on the BIOS.

And thats it - all I can get out of it. Clearing the CMOS doesnt help.

It's an Abit IP35 Pro, Q6600, GTX285, etc.

Any ideas? It's usually a completely flawless machine that goes weeks and weeks without a reboot :(

Thanks guys :(

Almost always the motherboard if that happens. Have you seen if you can get a list of POST codes on BIOS faults? That's what I found.

Which would seem to indicate trying a full CMOS reset first of all, which is always a good idea in these cases anyway.

Edit : You already did that. Doh. The memory modules as RJC suggests is the only other thing I can think of doing, short of removing everything but the CPU, keyboard, graphics card and one memory module.

Sometimes a failed drive can prevent a machine POSTing. I doesn't sound good though :(

Can try removing one of the memory modules and reboot, then try the other if that fails.

Do you have the possibility of testing parts in another machine.

Removed CMOS battery for 5 minutes. Put it back in.

Got into BIOS - setup the correct date/time, hit save and exit and it failed to POST again this time code 05.

Restarted. Again, no POST. Code 01.

Next question - I have a RAID-0 stripe set up on this machine. Is there anything I should know about making sure I don't break the stripe and loose all my data?

Going to have to give up until January 1st as I'm away first thing tommorrow morning, what a completley annoying time for this to happen! Just want to make sure I can preserve that RAID Array.

Hi, the post code 90 can signal a bad bios, but seeing as you tried a cmos reset then it rules that out. But failing that simple thing it can also show that it is a bad PSU, or dead board and as a far out idea try the GPU. It wont be memory as that is normally a C1 error or bad ram on the GPU.

Sounds like a bad PSU or board blown. Have you tried re-seating the CPU just in case or another CMOS reset or CMOS battery replaced as the 90 code points to BIOS fault 1st. Hope this helps.

There's nothing specific, other than if you plug them into a different controller and it doesn't see them as an array, don't try and create an array from them. I've had an array created on a Marvell controller recognised on an Adaptec so you might be in luck.

Thanks for the advice guys.

Turned it on this morning, POST'd to the Abit splash screen but nothing else. Going to have to give up until January 1st :(

I'll revisit this a few days later :p

Hi guys,

I'm back and trying to fix this. I've narrowed it down to my GTX280 - the machine POST's without issue using an old Radeon X850XT.

Problem is I cannot now boot into Windows. I get a BSOD complaining of REGISTRY_ERROR. I can't get in via Safemode either - it either hangs, or simply reboots, or gives me a BSOD.

Bit stuck now!

Is this Windows XP?

May be to do with using a different manufacturer graphics card, though strictly shouldn't happen. Could also be corruption of the HD from the crash/freeze I suppose.

I'd try a linux boot disc to rule out any more hardware issues, if you can. A repair install of windows may also get you back going, it shouldn't erase data but it is a pain.

Could be a graphics problem but you can't yet rule out PSU or memory from my experience, so try and swap out to test if you can.

As you important data is backed up I would try a fresh install with the ATI gpu then change to the Nvidia and see how you get on.

It's Windows 7.

I'm pretty sure again it now isnt the graphics card, as oddly it POST's fine with the GTX280 back in

But I cant get it into safe mode, or anything.

Trying a fresh Windows install onto another disk and I've got the 'Starting Windows' part of the installer... it seems to have frozen up..

I have the same mobo with the exact same problem. I did a google search and is a very common problem :(

I got the BSOD, it rebooted and hung on the splash screen. Powered down, turned back on, fans and everything comes on, no output to screen, no power or hdd lights on.

Tried removing every component bar the CPU, and refitting one by one but no joy. I'm on the look out for a new mobo now, which is a shame is it's a great board.

best thing i can say is go freshely install windows 7 again, or aleast try.
i belive the registry error you got is due to the change in gpu's and hardware.
best of luck
