Right is there a magical machine you can purchase to completly wipe hard drives so they are non recoverable? it has to be fast though I have about 80 odd drives here and dont want to sit about waiting for software to do the same job :P

Somthing with either natural or electro magnets would be cool. Just to pass the drive through the machine or somming, if there isnt WHY NOT :P

cheers <3

Nope, no fast way:-

Acronis® DriveCleanser® 6.0 features the list of predefined algorithms containing known national standards as well as algorithms developed by authoritative experts in data security. For example, the U.S. Standard DoD 5220.22-M

can take 2/3 hours per drive ;)

Depending on how large the drives are you might just be better off destroying them!

Damn, though there might of been a electro magnet machine or a massive natural magnet driven machine that you pass the discs through.

I placed my man pouch "phone pouch thing" on a raptor by accident, and the whole drive got wiped :S and thst just a small magnet, i just assumed that if you got a load of powerful magned above and below the drive, as it passed throguh the magnetic fields, it would screw over the ions on the discs and make them unreadable?

I had a conversation about this once with one of my mates. He claimed that it would be impractical to generate the required magnetic field.

Because the distance between the heads on the drives is so small, they generate a strong field. To effectively wipe the data you'd need a really strong magnet to generate a field of the same strength over the whole width of the drive.

I'm doing some work with the electronics recycling division of the company I work for, so the same thought had crossed my mind for some kind of industrial wiping proccess.

PK!

I have access to a 9.6 Tessla MRI magnet - that would do the job real quick. Mind you, they wouldn't be good for much afterwards...

they are just old drives from old machines, where the draive has been replaced so we wont be reusing the drives (most of them are like 4- 20gb n e ways)

Mmmm large magnet :D drill might be a bit messy bandsaw mebbe? tree shredder?

:P

Right so only options are atm:

Posting them using royal mail.
Shredding them.
Using Software to clense them.

So if i was to go the software route, i would have to make a machine for that soul purpose. Is there software that can do say 8 drives at once ?

Yes indeedy there are machines ( using very powerful electro magnets )
that can wipe a drive in seconds , they are used in recycling centers ( reusing old tech and rebuilding it for 3rd world countries )

They would cost an arm and a leg tho
