Machine washing a down jacket that says do not wash?

Apparently it's the drying that's the issue..
Indont reallt understand how hand wash even works. It's still going to get soaked. It would still need to be tumble dried.

If I was going to do it myself I'd use wool settings
Ah ha, yeah. Got ya.

Yeah it's the most annoying part about washing any down jacket, you end up chasing clumps around like a nutter no matter what you do.

Its the first time it has to be washed. I've gotten away with airing it. But this last trip it def needs a wash.

Coming up to winter now too. So I'd like to be able to use it

Wouldn't bother myself, unless you've had the value out of it already. I'd just wipe it down inside and out. Good down should handle a bit of sweat, that's if it managed to even seep through. I normally wear a thin long sleeve to help prevent sweat passing onto a jacket.

I think the biggest problem is the feathers clumping together and making sure they're all dry. This is where a tumble drier on the lowest heat setting would be ideal, but it's your own gamble as to whether the jacket will survive.
I've got some ridiculously expensive Hungarian Goose Down pillows and they are machine washable up to 40c.
Washable up to 40°C in a large capacity machine. Tumble dry on hot setting until completely dry. Do not dry clean. Using a pillow protector will help to prolong the life of your pillow

I think I'd do them on a delicates wash though, I'd imagine the jacket can survive that, if not the OP can just hand wash it in the bath.

fill the bath half way, add some washing machine detergent let it soak a bit, agitate it some, let it soak some more.

do the same thing with clean water a few times.

Seems like drying them fast enough is probably the issue

Yeah I think 8ts the drying.
And hand wash or machine it seems like you'd still need to tumble dry.

That seems to be the main thing you must have a tumble dryer

launderettes still exist, also some Morrisons have massive washing machines ouitside in the carpark, I'm guessing they have a dryer function too

My washing machine has a duvet cycle and I think this would be the ideal cycle if the OP's washing machine also has such a cycle. If not, then a silk or delicates program should be gentle enough.

I wouldn't dry a jacket on a high heat, just in case the material melts. A long cool drying cycle will help fluff the jacket up, as well as removing any of clumps of feathers every 15 minutes or so.

I can remember washing feather pillows and duvet in a previous machine and that put me off. Not just the clumping of feathers, but also when they start pricking through the fabric later on. :(
