Mafia - Forum game

Right, all the emails have been sent out. No chatting now, we are in game mode now. Mafia, that includes you. I will see if I get the chance to get a game thread up while I'm here at work, but otherwise it will be up when I get home. Either way, we will be starting during day, which will last until 10pm on Monday.

Sent out a quicktopic link to the 4 of you to discuss the game, easier than sending trust messages and more people can contribute. If anyone else is interested then just say and I'll send the link over.
Just don't post it or any of its contents here, naturally.

Given the lack of knowledge of the group of these specialised roles (Most people hadn't even played mafia, let alone using special roles), would it be possible for you to post a list of roles, both possible and not. That way everyone gets a chance to read through and familiarise themselves with them. Otherwise I can see the game being over and everyone going 'huh, there's a job that does that? That sucks.' Which will likely spoil their interest in further games. Saying you've narrowed down the list of possible roles from 150 down to 30-50 is a start, but as Reaper says, expecting them to read an entire wiki full of different possible roles and expecting them to understand possible implications doesn't do much to help, and won't help lessen any negative feelings due to a loss/death caused by a role that they didn't properly understand or even realise existed.
Could you at least narrow it down to 10-15? While still a fair amount to read, that would probably reach the line of due diligence for research for the people playing the game.

But then I lose my reason for voting for him! :(

Edit: plus other people have quoted it too. If anyone late joining the thread sees my post, they might not realise the joke and take it more seriously.

I will possibly be needing a replacement in 13 Doctors Mafia. Fortyseven, as a Townie who got lynched before acquiring any additional information I could as a last resort sub you back in - which is why no ghostdoc yet - but I'd rather have someone else.

Brabbinho, don't discuss the game in progress in here.

Implying that there is a ghostdoc?

It's always been traditional to keep scum out of the ghostdoc in case someone gives something away, for the rare occasions where a dead Townie is asked to replace a lurker. I came close to asking 47 to replace Psymonkee at one point. On the other foot, it's now Day 4 and I'm not going to make replacements at this stage.

Gives something away to the ghosts? Not really much they can do with the info :p

That said, it's lonely in the ghostdoc :(

Wouldn't it have been easier to use something like quicktopic? It's more like a forum so allows a more obvious way of following any conversations rather than bouncing between columns.

Phew, what a game. Going to re-read the thread tomorrow now I know who everyone is. It may be an idea for everyone else to do the same. See how people play when they have certain roles. There is often a difference in how people play when they are town compared with scum, though some of that could be attributed to them being new to the game in our case.

I'm going to leave it a week or two before starting up another game, let everyone digest what happened here and recover!

I've always used the scum term since I used to play lots of werewolf. It's exactly the same games, just with different names for all the roles, and scum is the generic 'bad guy' term used as a blanket term for those roles. Especially useful if you play a game with both mafia and werewolf factions present.

As for the next game, how do people feel about not knowing the roles in the game? I've got one lined up that would be much simpler than the one we just did, with a lower number of possible roles so you won't be overloaded, but if you prefer to know then I've got another idea planned.

To be honest, the themes don't really interest me. There's no impact on the gameplay, it just alters the day and night posts by the GM slightly, but the only information people really care about in those are the names of whoever died!

I would be looking at having a mixture from the following list:

Cop (And 1-shot cop) - Investigate a player at night
Doctor (And 1-shot doctor) - Protects a player from night kills
Vigilante (And 1 shot vigilante) - May kill a player at night
Innocent Child - Is revealed as a town player from the start
Mason - Masons are allowed to communicate at night. All masons are town aligned.
Roleblocker (And 1 shot roleblocker) - Can be town or scum aligned, can block a player's role from happening. This includes night kills if you target the correct player.
Godfather - Scum who appears innocent to cop investigations
Serial Killer - Not town or scum. May kill 1 player each night, wins if they are the last player alive, or nothing can prevent this from happening.

Hopefully this would prove to be a manageable selection of different roles without being an information overload. There may be multiple of some roles and none of others.
