Mafia II Thread

I have never felt so confused by what platform to buy this game on. I downloaded the PS3 demo and I must say I was not impressed with how it ran. I know its not the final product but it doesnt install much faith in me. They way pc games seem to be going as well it will probably be ported from console to pc anyway.
What would the choice be for those with either a Ps3, Xbox or Pc?

It's difficult. Do you buy a different version as a way of protesting that PS3 sloppy ports are not acceptable? If you do, you could risk further games not being available on the PS3 at all due to lacklustre sales.

PC is undoubtedly the superior version (having tried the 360 and PC demos)

100% agree if you have a reasonable PC get that version both console versions are a let down and I'd say the PS3 version is probbaly worse than the 360 one tbh.

LOL, I love it when the company says two completely different things.

EDIT: Thanks for the link - very interesting read. Elizabeth is getting a right bashing from unhappy PS3 owners. It definitely seems that platform has got the short end of the stick when it comes to visual quality. Again. Frankly, four years since launch, it's ridiculous.

A few 'geek' jerno's who attend various techy exhibitions i speak to on a regular basis both agree that, in their op, Sony deliberately made the PS3 a nightmare to program for and then port games to the 360, hoping that their name would win the generation (Like with the PS2) and with falling third party support, MS would die in the console market.

Didnt happen though, shot themselves in the foot.

True? duno, its just some jerno's opinion but it sounds possible.

Downloaded the demo for ps3 and it was ok i guess, thought i would love this but its a definite "meh" from me. Looked rather good though i must say.

Also i dont know if its been mentioned yet but Official Playstation Magazine gave it a 7/10 as well.

I blew the dust off my 8800 GTS and tried the PC demo. It didn't run too bad even on a 5050e, but none of the settings got rid of the vehicle popup past the Gunshop on the right as you come off the flyover (which is a bit annoying when flat out).

The 360 version seems to be all there'ish except lower res. I've since noticed the glass on the vehicle you're driving is a rubbish looking mesh at times, but I rarely use chase cam.

The best thing about the PC version imo is the way you can go from 360 pad to mouse and keyboard on the fly.

I think I will do just that, I will double check up on the specs of my pc as I am a bit out of touch with the latest and greatest machines. Seems a lot of people feel the same as I do being that the ps3 demo isnt all that great. I am yet to try the 360 version but I think PC it is.

About time I was able to grab this off of Live! Finally had a chance to run both side by side, well ish, had to change between HDMI channels on the TV :D

From my own view, seeing both running at the very same point in the demo, the PS3 wins hands down on graphics, the colour pallet is more vibrant and the distance rendering on the PS3 is sharper than that of the 360; it was the same in CoD4 when I used to run those at the same time.

No real difference in frame rate/screen tearing between the two, unless you are really really looking for it – but who would be doing that when there’s such a great game to play; I guess fany boys of either console lol :p

As this game is all SP I was planning on ordering based on the one that looked the best, I did originally have a pre-order placed for the PS3 version, but after seeing so many titles that looked better on 360, I decided to hold off until I saw with my own eyes – so the pre-order will be going back on for the PS3 I think :)

To the fans of either console, take it or leave it with these comments, I have no affiliation with either as I own both, and both were on HDMI with correct console and TV setup for colours etc.

Are you sure you didn't get the two the wrong way round, Scort? :D Check out Digital Foundry's comparison.

Lol, positive matey, got my PS3 on HDMI 1 and 360 on HDMI 3 - I'm pretty handy with counting up to 10, so I didn't get confused :D

Never noticed the grass though, may take another look - but as this is a 'Mafia' game and not 'Grass Cutters Elite', I don't think that one detail will sway me from [what I have seen to be] the better version.

More to come....

Oh an ninja edit (well not really), I never trust review sites now, regardless how unbiased they deem themselves - that website’s video for example seemed like they were trying to tear the PS3 more by panning the camera around, yet did no such thing on the 360 one – stuff like that always makes me think “hmmmmmm, BS” :D

Had a couple of run through's on the PS3 demo and must say I am warming to it. Likely to still pick it up, as others have said, for the story if anything. Oh, and the music.
