Make cannabis a Class A Drug, say Conservative Police Commissioners...

Don't forget it will also continue to better people's lives due to the same.

We know it is not an addictive drug yet billions globally use it, and have done since before laws, so the net effects must be positive else would usage continue?

So as per the source above hospitalizations have nearly doubled. I'd say that's something to be concerned with.
Do you truly think it betters people's lives? Or does it just make them think less about the bad aspects? In the same way that alcohol numbs pain so does weed.

Just without the stinking hangover!

That question can get quite deep, I mean it's a lot more than simply that one aspect but, "thinking less about the bad" is one person's cure for anxiety and another person's procrastination into ignorance.

On the whole the communities of "pot-heads" (who these days are compiled of Dr's, scientists, programmers, lawyers, farmers... all types) appear as happy and content as most other people.

Appearances can be deceptive though.

Think from your own point of view. Do you think you've smoked more when you've gone through the tougher times, or the good?

Almost doubled in one small age range, for males only and mostly due to accidental consumption. From 5.4 to 9.5 per 100,000. That's a rate of 0.0095% or an increase of 0.0041 percentage points within that very small demographic.

You're not half posting some rubbish in this thread. Comparing legalising the consumption of cannabis with murder and now this. I haven't heard of any criminal gangs profiting from illicit sales of cigarettes or alcohol in this country? Sure, Steve from Skegness might bring back a few thousand cigarettes from Benidorm to sell to his mates once a year, but that's hardly organised crime..
Wait you think there aren’t criminal gangs making money from bringing in tax free cigarettes ?

The per 100,000 stat is actually kind of useless without more information. Is it based on the total population of Canada or is it based on hospital admissions (for that demographic)? If it is based on overall population then we need a reference number.

Perhaps I'm naive but not at any great scale, no. The whole thing doesn't seem lucrative enough. Admittedly, I have done no research on this, so will hold my hands up if I'm wrong.

Loss of revenue to the taxpayer alone is over a billion for counterfeit alcohol and hundreds of millions for cigarettes. That's from what's seized.

That doesn't include smuggled. That's counterfeit only.

So yeah, you're wrong.

Here's a thought to consider regarding legalisation.

IMHO alcohol is worse for your body than MJ. Look at what alcohol does to a petri dish of bacteria.

I digress... Given that alcohol is freely available to over 18s why is everyone not an alcoholic? Why aren't people unable to do their jobs because they're so drunk?

Is it because on the whole people can self regulate and use things sensibly? Why would it be any different if MJ was legalised?

It would take a lot of crime off the streets and with regulation would come better strains that are more evenly balanced. High THC strains can cause the issues mentioned. Could also be a good opportunity for some public education.

There are many studies that show benefits with moderate use.

There will always be people who go far with anything, that can't be helped.

It's easy to find negative studies, in fact it's easy to find studies that support any agenda, depends on who pays for them. We shouldn't use that as a basis for classification. Gotta read past the headlines.

I haven't touched the stuff for years but I remember it fondly.

Or tougher crimes, instant on the spot fine of 10k if you earn let's say <20k <30k etc etc and chain gang style prison sentence min 6 months for a second offence :) and then a year for a third etc etc.

I would make a cracking Tory home secretary scary :) :)

This has to be one of the dumbest posts yet.

Alcohol abuse is a massive problem in this country. Over half a million people were admitted to hospital with alcohol as the primary cause. Nearly 200,000 people are in treatment due to alcohol abuse. People are unable to do their jobs because they're so drunk. That's why you have things like mandatory drug and alcohol testing...

People can't self regulate. That's why alcohol charities exist. That's why one of the police are overwhelmed on weekends in particular.

What a wonderful government we have right now. Well thought out decisions and policies. Couldn’t ask for any more. Urmmm. Cost of smoking crisis now also :p
