Make XboX live Free!!

£40 a year is £40 a year too much if sony can provide it free with better bandwidth. It took 4 hours to download 25% of pro evo today on an 8mb connection - glad that i dont pay for basic live

Yeah for a demo that was being hammered by loads of other people trying to get it. Great comparison.

When I had my PS3 it took me ages to download stuff from it, most notably 6 hours to get Tekken Dark Ressurrection, now first of it was not my connection at fault as my PC was getting 2000+ kb/s when I tested for comparison and I had tried wired and wireless plus all the ports were opened.

I can understand a demo that has just been released going slow but for PSN everything was slow, for Live it's usually pretty snappy. (Live is free for demo/video downloads as well and they are just as fast even with Silver)

Gold gets Beta entries and some time exclusivity. I'd like only HD versions of shows to be available to Gold members when the video service arrives too.

Dont you reckon there should be some Dedi servers though?

Just seems like they should be doing some more for us.

360 can barely play a game for 3 hours straight without getting RROD let alone overnight constantly acting as a server. :p

Its the same with anyone. Say the Wii is just a novelty your head gets taken off, Say the PS3 is expensive and has no games and it happens again. Best thing to do is just ignore it :p

It would be really nice if it were free. However, I imagine it would prove to be much less idiot proof in terms of gaming online if it was. Being a paid for service, it's almost as if you're paying Microsoft for the priviledge of being insultated from the harsh, frustrating, technical realities of playing games over the internet. In essence, it ensures that user can take it all for granted, safe in the knowledge that he/she will be able to switch their console on and everything will just 'work'.

It's also very unlikely that we'd see the blistering download speeds we're used to on live if it were a free service.

What is a rip off, in my opinion, is the Live Arcade portion of the service. The games are too expensive and many are incredibly unsubstantial given how much they cost - especially in comparison to those found on Nintendo's Wii service. Why not give us a free download with every subscription renewel?

Give or take a few minutes the download speeds I get on xbox live are roughly identical to those I get on PSN (ie downloading an equal sized demo takes about the same time).

Thing is though the downloads are free, you can download with a Silver account so it's irrelevant really, with Gold you're not paying for downloads.
Dunno why people are complaining about paying for such a great service
Just looking for things to complain about really. You'll find the only people who are that bothered own a PS3.

yeah if, but they can't

I was under the impression they already did??

Dedicated Servers = Stability

Dedicated servers take users out of the loop as far as game hosting is concerned, So that should usually equal better bandwidth also, As Sony dedicated servers are no doubt monsters. With a Monster connection, opposed to the DSL offered to the public.

SDSL vs ADSL if you will. So bandwidth is always going to be lacking on the home user side fo things when compared to company owned dediservers.

Anyways, As far as this thread is concerned, If Xbox live will go down hill if the money is taken away, then it shouldnt happen, if the standard of service can stay the same and its free, then it should happen. Obvious answer I know :p

While paying for a service doesn't nessersarily stop idiots on XBL. It should certainly slow it down.

12 year old has XBL, loads up halo and acts like a noob so much he gets banned. What's he going to do? Pay again and try to act decent or pay again to get banned again?

I don't know the details on the PS3 online service but I assume if someone gets banned they can just make a new account?

I don't run into many idiots on XBL and I would hope that's because people use the feedback and report member feature.

Dedicated Servers have one downside. You can bet they wont be around for ever. There was a music rhythm game for the PS2 that had its servers closed down a while back. I know it was probably closed down due to inactivity. But its nice to know with some games I can always have a game.
