after having a major ploblem with my current PC (not letting me run IE, Outlook or install/uninstall anything) ive decided its time to replace my 754 AMD 3000+ CPU and 6600GT setup and tomorrow collect my 8650+ Phenom with 4Gb mem 500gig HDD and 8800GT.

Problem is ive been playing mostly on the consoles of late and just got rid of my 360 but have played most of the main titles that are now being released on PC (bar Orange Box).

So can you guys advise me on some recent(ish) releases that are enjoyable, ive just purchased The Orange Box as the last game PC i played was HL2 apart from a dabble with RCT3 thats it

Also will the above system run Crysis, i dont know much about it other then it looks ace and is supposed to need a good PC to run it (will my new one do?) also i have a workmate who is selling it will i be able to install it OK?

Finally... one for the misses... she wants to get into an MMORPG and ive purchased a 14 day trail for WoW but is it too late to get into it and also is there any better alternatives (or very close without the monthly fee or a pay as you play option for WoW)

Cheers

Gary

Your new pc should run most things fine even crysis.

Wow is bet for new gamer.

IF she is experienced get her to play EVE. I dont even pay for it anymroe - make enough isk to buy gtc in game.

The Orange box really contains most of the best games I've played recently. It depends on your taste of course but if like me you prefer linear / focused / scripted/ narrative games, you'll love it. Portal is a bit different & short as it is, is exceptional.
There's a free mod useing the HL2 episode 1 engine called Minerva, which you can find listed on steam. It's nothing less than an absolutely free, riveting single player game, based on hl2 ep1 (included in orange box).
If you like independant games & shooters, I'd recommend Everyday Shooter ($10 approx £5 on steam) & / or Geometry Wars ($4 approx £2 on Steam).
For sheer pathos, great art design & decent gameplay (especially on your comp which slightly beats mine in every department) Bioshock deserves a look.
If you like semi - realistic driving games, ie between arcade & simulation then Race Driver : Grid should be right up your street (see the extensive thread in this forum).
Finally, I love Dreamfall: The longest Journey & the original The Longest Journey. They aren't cutting edge & indeed are only just games but they are great experiences.
That's my completely biased, utterly subjective recommendations.

cheers Quixote, im looking forward to getting on orange box, and ive read about some of the great mods available so im gonna try them out.

on the other ones though, ive played and got bored of bioshock on the 360 and unless i decide to set my wheel up for the PC im gonna stick to consoles for racing games (i.e. GT5 and F1)

and also with regards to the WoW query, she is a mother of 1 and i work fulltime so im reluctant to pay the monthly fee as it will only be a few hours a week she will get free to game, but ill see what she thinks i suppose... women

Much as I think Multi-Online-Whatever-It's-Called represents the eventual death of PC gaming (At the least), I'm going to try & be helpful - I agree with sr4470 - Guild wars doesn't charge a fee, you just pay a bit more for the game to pay for the artists & programmers efforts & the servers. It's ideal for casual players & removes some of the more retarded masochistic elements popular in other similar games, whilst still being a complete waste of time.
As for Bioshock, fair play, it's mostly similar on PC compared to 360. If it's merits didn't overcome it's flaws for you on console, I doubt they will on PC.
As far as driving games go, for non - simulation games, the 360 pad on PC is fantastic - not sure how much you know about it but if you plug in any wired 360 pad & install the drivers, you're there on all modern games. I'd recommend a 360 pad as an essential companion for PC gaming.
Anyway, have fun. I also enjoyed the new sam & max games.

If you keep playing 14-day free trials of various MMOs you can keep yourselves busy for a long long time! :p I hear very good things about City of Heroes. Eve is probably a no-go if she's going to only be playing a few hours a week. Guild Wars is awesome and I enjoyed it for 2 years, I think they gave us trial keys to give out if you want me to have a look for you. Trouble is I haven't been able to run the game since installing my new sound card as it BSODs, and I don't really want to uninstall it just to log in to collect a trial key...

Race Driver GRID
HL2 episode 1 and 2
Team fortress 2
Call of duty 4
Crysis
Company of heroes (as ever) best game ever made imo
Mass effect (if you didn't play it on xbox)
Stalker
Timeshift
Assasins creed
The Witcher

Welcome back.

Suggest NOT EvE for MMO as it is an incredibly long term business sim/strategy sim/economic sim type of beast.

You can't go wrong with WoW - its very complete, polished, balanced and is the result of years of cash flow financed improvements. Levelling from 1-60 has been extnsively modified to allow for the fact that the poulations at these levels is quite sparse and grouping is difficult - it plays more as a single player game with the MMO advantages of interaction with other players for trading and socialising. Levelling 60-70 via the Burning Crusades is more traditional and needs more grouping. New expansion 70+ due out in 3-6 months which will give the game a new lease of life.

As for other games the PC games market is pretty dire in my not so humble opinion. There IS some great stuff out there but its not like it once was when you could go out and buy a great new game every week. Look up Stardock's offerings. The new Duke Nukem game might be released this decade. Oblivion is a killer game you can live quite happily in the world of Oblivion for months. Personally I still love Masters of Orion 2, Civilization series, Command and Conquer Generals: Zero Hour, Thrones and Patriots series. Settlers Series, Age of Empires Series.

Suggest you get Windows XP rather than Vista. not to start an argument. :)

your not the first person to tell me this unfortunatly id already paid for vista and i now have the PC at home.

if i have too many problems with vista i may go back to XP but id like to try stick it for now.

Make sure you buy company of heroes gold you get the expansion with it.
I think grid is only £20+17.5% on steam
