Malaysian Grand Prix 2014, Kuala Lumpur - Race 2/19

I still cant get over what a terrific decision it was for Hamilton to join Mercedes. Just before Mclaren slipped into mediocrity and Mercedes get proper quick.

Obviously really happy with the result but I share the concern that we're just replacing RBR with Merc for 'sailing off into the sunset'.

I'm certainly not going to be upset if Hamilton wins the WDC but it would be hypocritical to complain about predictability over the last few years and not acknowledge it if this season turns out the same.

It might be boring in terms of who wins the championship. However, i sort of always expected that one team would totally nail it with regards to the new engines and rules and therefore be loads faster than anyone else. Looks like Mercedes have done just that.

Lotus seem to have gone the opposite way and completely bodged it.

Called it :p

Seriously it was obvious, Mclaren even when they were good were making mistakes and unless you're Red Bull you aren't likely to have a good car every year.

Merc as Brawn lost funding, lost most of the team and got miles behind. But as Merc they spent 3-4 years building up a team to be super competitive for the new regs. All along they were building to be one of if not the most ready and competitive team for this season. None of it was secret, they said it plainly for anyone who asked. People were judging the car say two years ago based on a weakened team spending 100+million less as that car was developed. Last year's car has a bigger team working on it and more money and this year was the first car made completely after they had got the team to full strength.

I think the only unknown was Hamilton probably had a very good understanding of the idiotic move to rebuild the Mclaren for 2013 and realised they wouldn't be competitive last year and just due to bad decisions wouldn't matter if they were competitive this year.

I was thinking today, if this was Mclaren they'd find a way to **** up Hamilton's race.

Hamilton crazy unlucky not to have a 14 point lead in the title race already though, a €1 spark plug cover broke and cost him the last race.

He done the damaged on a curb.

It failed fully on that curb but it was almost certainly damaged in the pitstop and that was just the jolt it needed to drop off.

Well they all knew about this rule so I don't see a problem but don't tell me rb has lost the page that it's on ;)
And don't forget this rule was brought in because of the rb mistake last year.

It's good to know that with the engine turned down Lewis did the fastest lap :D

I do think they need to punish the team more than the driver. Though I'm not sure Riccy isn't partly to blame. Was there still a red light on in the pit when he left or did they change it to green?

I think if the driver is told to leave properly(green light for those that use a light system and jack man getting out of the way) then the punishment should be a large fine and a reduction in constructors championship points but they shouldn't punish the driver directly. Frankly no drive through and no grid penalty but docking say 10 points or something in constructors hurts the team badly.

If the driver is also at fault(or entirely I guess) if they leave without being told to, then the driver should get a really damn harsh penalty, the 10 place grid penalty is appropriate.

I don't like a drivers race being ruined in advance by something out of his control though, that sucks :(

Red Bull called to the stewards.

Some of the guys in the pitlane during the race when they were trying to refit Ricciardo wheel didn't have the mandatory safety gear on.

That may cost them quite a bit of money.

Totally fubar. Fine penalise the guy and reprimand him in other ways but don't take the spectacle away from the next race, especially since he has shown he can take the race to Seb.
His unsafe release had no bearing on the results.
I am very happy for the Mercs doing well, but everything else about this season is just retarded.

Teams should get penalty points too to be honest. Almost had a repeat of last year. With the increased torque these new power units chuck out, imagine if it was one of the rear wheels that wasn't fastened on properly?

From what I saw of the lights, the red light went out as the front wheelman pulled the gun back, but did not raise his hand (I guess he was trying to realign himself), DR then pulled away and as he did so, the light went back to red. So I am guessing that the fault was in the triggering system for the lollipop.

I think a few points off their constructors total would be more fitting for an unsafe release. I know it's a team sport, and the driver is just part of the team, but somehow punishing a driver for a pit-stop error doesn't sit well with me.

I suppose that would be difficult if a team doesn't have constructors points (or you're Marussia or Caterham).

Personally I think the driver and team should always both suffer

I also hope the people saying it's good that RBR aren't leading it will be more excitingare wwaking up

I also always have thought merc would romp away. Thought it wouldbe mmorethan tthis if I am honest. Wonder how much they have yet to use?

See they have finally got webbers car/luck to the correct driver! Stir stir

Lotus almost got a point!

Well... decent race in the end!

Easy lights to flag victory for Lewis, beasting it in the fastest car.

Unluckiest driver of the day, Daniel Ricciardo.. Real shame as he had Vettel in his pocket most of the race, awful pitstop then front wing problem ruined his race.

Driver of the day, Jenson Button .. when everyone else was having an easy time of it (or making mistakes) he drove a controlled and impressive race, gaining 4 places and defending against the faster Williams F1 Team brilliantly.

And most stubborn driver of the day award goes to Massa, absolutely loved to see him disobeying the team orders... if Bottas was faster then it begs the question ... why couldn't he overtake????????

...Well done to Massa for sticking one up!

Team orders can do one!

Button, driver of the day? Bottas would have been all over him had Massa not been a donkey, Button got lucky! I'd therefore put Bottas or Hulk as better drivers over Button today. Hulk was great. Clearly though Hammy was the best driver ;)

How was Lewis the best driver? He didn't do anything, anyone can put their foot down in the fastest car and win, just like Vettel did for the last four years.
