Malaysian Grand Prix 2014, Kuala Lumpur - Race 2/19

Did they introduce the fuel graphic in the build up to the race? Did they explain it at all, because it would be interesting to know. Have they got a list of fuel used and they are just assuming 100kg's of fuel onboard and doing a percentage, or do the cars have to say how much fuel is on board before the race. Is the percentage what they are sending the FIA directly so it's calculated by the team, etc.

They didn't go beyond "it's fuel percentage init" during the race.

The fuel graphic is taken from the fuel flow sensor which is sent directly to FIA via telemetry, and is how much fuel they've used, not how much is left. Lap ~50 ism ham was on ~86kilos where vet was just over 90kilos.

There's no way to tell what fuel they started with or what they have left. Just how much they've used.
Since refilling was bad, they run the minimum fuel they can a fast driver can not make the weight penalty up. Last few years it's been 0.2-0.3 per kilo per lap which is huge amount of time, especially as your're carrying that fuel most of the race.
This year I've seen no estimated, but as the car is heavier and the fuel limit is lower, the time penalty is going to be less. Wouldn't be surprised if the penalty is half of last years.

As some will know I'm really anti this years F1 regulations, especially the engines. Nevertheless I have followed F1 for a very long time and I wanted to give it a chance.

I watched the whole race and with the exception of a few overtakes was bored senseless. The cars just sound awful, the fastest lap was 4 seconds slower than last year, I don't care about fuel efficiency and for me this is no longer Formula 1. Call it something else please.

Well done to Lewis and Merc. Alonso had a good race but I was bored after 25 laps and the sound was not good.

I do find it funny that rb moan about the fuel sensors then vimto goes faster for a few laps.
Now we know Merc has a load left in the car and they don't have to use it.

It's a stat, fuel efficiency didn't effect the race in general, in no more than it did last year. Plenty of races last year had fuel saving, this race really didn't. People before the race were saying "it's a third less fuel so there will be loads of fuel saving"... well not really because the cars are a third more efficient as well. They didn't put 300kg's of fuel and max out in the last 4 years, they cut it to the bone.

because the rule is in there, they are paying more attention to it and we have a fuel stat to follow in a race, but ultimately it's had little to no effect on either race. We have dozens and dozens of times in the past 4 years seen someone have to pull out of a battle due to fuel saving. So that was F1, but this isn't... even though they didn't actually do any fuel saving this race. Red Bull were using more fuel.... but they continued to do so and they couldn't pass Rosberg regardless of using more fuel.

Hamilton/Rosberg last year when they under fuelled him too much did more fuel saving and adjusted how they ran the race more than anyone in either race this year.

Well done to Hamilton and Mercedes, faultless weekend from then.

But what a boring race, i hope some of the other teams buck their ideas up and mount a challenge or this will be another boring season of domination, just with a different team.

With louder engines last year one man drove off into the sunset. The engine noise isn't the be all and end all of F1.

As for fuel, for me the idea of F1 is to push the boundaries of the rules as they are, if the teams were given carte blanche to do as they please the best engineers would inevitably end up at the teams with who pay the best anyway so it would still be the usual suspects at the front.

It might not be F1 as it was but it is still F1.

Sorry, im confused how you know which car was carrying 86 or 90 kilos? No way of knowing that yet is there? Just a graphic of %:used, which could be completely meaningless if for example Merc started with 80kg and RBR started with 95 kg ( exsmple, not actual figures)

Really depressed at how slow Mclaren were even compared to FI and Ferrari, heat didnt helpvbut even so worrying times unless they can find a good step soon

Edit - pretty dull race for the most part, but glad JB was able to keep both Williams behind at the finish.

See highlights for the next race are on at stupid time

Fortunately the BTCC starts this weekend, go watch that instead

Its a graphic of how many kilos used, not % and not how much is left, so they used 85kilos and 90kilos.

Great Job Lewis and Niko H.
Woeful Podium interview, who the hell cares about TV Personalities conducting them? Suzie Perry could have done a better job and that's saying something. :p

I know where you're coming from, gone are the days where you can call it a Petrol head sport. Maybe battery head is more fitting :D

Well in this case percentage and kilos is exactly the same thing, it's worked off the 100KG limit. ;)

I think it's assuming they have 100kg on board at the start of the race. Sometimes they will have more than that, especially if the track is tight on fuel and also as lap to grid, warmup lap, cooldown lap aren't included in the 100kg limit.
