Malaysian Grand Prix 2015, Kuala Lumpur - Race 2/19

Guys just started watching a minute ago and I noticed a red Ferrari leading the race, I'm quite confused.
Can anyone explain what has happened.

Many thanks

Did one less stop, early safety car, Merc pitted, Vettel didn't. Merc then attempted to one stop the next 50 laps and as a result had horrific pace. They switched Hamilton to a 3 stop but too late and having slowed too much to try and stretch out the second stint, it didn't work. Then they went and put on the wrong tire at the last stint giving Hamilton next to no chance.

In reality it is a blip. But probably only 0.5 second a lap difference in race pace and lets see how Ferrari develop over the season. I think by the closing races of the season it could be very tasty.

Brundle not quite nailing it but saying the right thing, Ferrari stuck with a strategy they knew would actually work in terms of laps per tire and maximising pace. Merc under the safety car randomly tried to take advantage by trying a strategy they had no clue could work... couldn't work, and realistically could be easily predicted wouldn't work.

It's insane basically to try and one stop a 50 lap period in 60c track temps, that was NEVER going to work, many cars tried it, all failed, badly. But before it happened it was SO obvious it wouldn't work, so so so so obvious that it's embarrassing anyone tried it let alone Mercedes who pride themselves on tire knowledge.

EDIT:- I think even further, Hamilton COULD have won this, when they asked him he put in a 1:41.7, I somewhat suspect at this stage they are engine saving believing they couldn't catch and pass.... I'm not so convinced of that. They aren't doing amazing lap times and Merc CAN go faster, it may be a fuel limit situation now though after pushing for quite a lot of laps.

I think they effectively gave it up rather than finding out how it would work out in the final 5 laps if Hamilton kept pushing.

I think it will be back to OZ standards in the next race, I think they took too much for granted and think about it a bit harder. They seemed to think they could run whatever tyre they wanted at any time and still win.
