Manchester Bombing *** Please remain respectful and refrain from antagonising posts ***

Should be 55 years solitary. I'm not usually a fan of the American prison system but one thing they've got right is their SuperMax prisons.
I hope the **** suffers.

Can understand in some cases the death penalty should not be given, but stuff like this I just don't understand why its not.

I’ve been against the Death Penalty for some time - there have been far too many cases already where it wasn’t absolutely certain that the convicted did what they were alleged to have committed.

I do, however, understand why some people would be for it in cases like this. Personally, I would still prefer to see him kept alive and his freedoms removed, without a chance of being released. At least they can spend some time thinking about the awful things they’ve done that put them there...

He won't be restricted in terms of commucation with other inmates, therefore poses a risk to convert people to the radical thinking

Not really, he will just see himself as martyr for the greater cause. Read the "Attacker" stub on the Wikipedia page for Manchester bombing, gives you a good idea of him and his brother. They were even rescued by Royal Navy at one point during Libyan civil war where the family spent time fighting.

Now the government will just be spending extra resources on keeping him alive in prison and he'll get to do a little radicalisation of others with his religious views while there. But hey, we live in a modern and liberal country so one of the better results you could have hoped for with this sentencing.

Is it definitely accurate that he will have the ability to mingle with others?

I don’t know much of the prison system, so excuse my naivety... but I’ve seen a few US prison documentaries, and their prisoners that have done the worst, get to stay in their own cell for life with one hour a day allowed to walk around a yard on their own.

That seems reasonable enough really...

Prisoners can be allowed out to attend hospital or a funeral, so the opportunity to escape and commit further atrocities is still a real possibility.

Surely that would be first agreed in some sort of “appeal” process - if you know what I mean - not an appeal as such, but “can I do this” sort of meeting?

Again, I’m very naive when it comes to what happens in prison and the process etc. So I don’t know - but I’d be pretty annoyed if he could just say he’s gotta go out willy nilly :p

Death penalty

He can do it again (indirectly) by converting all the small time morons in prison.

Death Penalty is a tricky thing. I think it brings us down to the terrorists level, and we're better than that as a society. I'd rather he got 55 years in solitary, although that has a knock on effect in that it costs society money to keep the criminal securely contained and fed while they make no useful contribution to that society that provides for them.

Well it doesn't mention where he'll be imprisoned but Belmarsh seems to be one of the popular places for terror offense types, like the guy from Lee Rigby case and the Hamza chap who has since been extradited and convicted in US.

He was put into that ADX Florence place and been a few news articles floating around about how he wants to be back in the UK so I'm guessing our maximum security prisons are much nicer than American ones :D

I don’t see why we can’t just get him making things for the public?

Give him the absolute basics, and if he wants any “luxuries” , he’ll need to work for them.

I have heard that we are quite lenient when it comes to our prisoners time in the cell - but it’s mostly just things people are saying, so I have no concrete things to say with regards to what happens to them really :p

I’ve always heard that Sweden is the place you wanna be if you fancy being a bad guy :p IKEA quality :p

They can apply to attend funerals in extenuating circumstances (i.e. a parent, partner, child, etc) but I believe it can be denied.

So, no, it isn't a case of saying "my mate's dad's uncle's window cleaner died, can I go to the funeral?", I'm just highlighting the fact that these lifers could have the opportunity to escape.

Good to know - wasn’t a dig or anything, I genuinely am dim when it comes to the legal process with the prisoners (although I would like to know more, so if anyone has a good documentary on UK Prisons - I’m in the market :p).

Yup, richard reid got 110yrs, without parole.

55 yrs is a good result for this country, but its going to be a relatively comfortable 55yrs isn't it, it should be uncomfortable at least. I wonder what happened with their dad, he had some extremist views as well iirc.
