taxi's are everywhere, will only be a few quid academy to canal street and probably less than 5 mins, if you'd rather not risk getting lost or having to mingle with the locals.
though on that route, you wont see many locals, 90% of the journey is through student central.
or hop on any bus outside the academy (you can rarely stand outside the academy and not see a bus coming, not kidding) heading towards picadilly and get off at the picadilly gardens, again probably 5 mins bus and then 2 mins walk to canal st.

Anyone looking for cheap hotel try the Walkabout hotel, seriously 
Think it's £60 for a room with 4 beds and a bathroom, think there's also dorm rooms that sleep 8.
As long as you're having a night out (it's obviously pretty noising until 3am) and you're not expecting the Lowery then it's great
Handily my mate get's it half price too
(although I don't need it now having loads of friends that live in the centre).

Its a very nice hotel to stay in, the rooms are very modern art decore, but apart from that they are very good, room service is spot on and also you can see some really fit girls walking round the bar there late at night, wearing not a lot
