Manual Gears

So I just started to use them and I'm getting used to it a bit but can anyone give me any tips.

Are you taking about racing games? Get a steering wheel and alos there sould be a gear meter which should give you an indication on when to change gears

Like those fun racing games like dirt and maybe f1 2010 (if I get it). I will probably buy a steering wheel when I get good enough at the pad, and I just heard that I would be quicker if I used manual gears so I thought to try it out ad I think it feels better but I'm not completely sure. So can anyone give me some tips.

I wouldn't use manual gears on pad, too few fingers going to too many buttons. With a wheel and peddles you have a spare hand for gears. Also do you drive in real life to understand how the clutch works. You should change gear when you hear the engine get just to the limiter and always try to keep the revs as high as possible for best throttle reaction.

How an you tell when the appropriate moments are and what should you do during corners do you gear down when going in and then start to accelerate a little then gear up at exit? I'm 12 no license it's against the law for me to have a license. What are revs?

Get gears and breaking done before the corner and then keep speed steady through the corner then accelerate as you straighten up to stop the car spinning out. All this is pretty much pointless though if you use traction control.

Get a wheel is a pretty good tip and since you can't control buggies on Dirt 2 you are better not using manual gears because you aren't very good at handling cars by the seems of it.

:) that explains a lot

When going into a corner brake and gear down then when exisitng the corner speed up.

if you brake and dont gear down you will have problems getting your speed back up. you can tell the right tie to change gear by engine noise

On a pad its always best to use auto its just easier.

I use a joypad with manual gears. If i'm not on manual then it feels like i'm not doing anything with the game, just accelerating and breaking which gets boring. Being able to downshift/upshift when and how you want adds quite a bit of speed - about 1 second in F1 2010 - making you more competitive with AI and doing TT.

When using manual gears you get into a rhythm of shifting/breaking/turning and it does feel very rewarding, especially on demanding tracks like Monaco where one tiny mistake can cost you.

Anuraj you will need to spend a whole day using manual to get used to it but you will eventually find that rhythm i spoke about then you won't want to go back to auto :)

And yes I would totally buy a wheel if it wasn't for the total lack of desk space and the fact that I'm saving for a real car :p
