Manual Gears

I always have trouble changing back down on games, I drive irl so I know how they work but just can't get the hang of it with a pad, I think I would be much better with a wheel

Yeah I just need some tips and places that are good to practice one.

I rebind all my pad keys, the default gear up and gear down doesn't work for me.

For reference: http://playstation3.files.wordpress.com/2005/10/xbox360controller.jpg

I change my B to be gear up and my A to be gear down, in some games they have the A and X buttons, which I couldn't get used to.

Depending on the game/sim, have a read about the gearbox modelling.

I know that iRacing and LFS both have a number of different gearbox types for various cars, and that the shifting technique can change between them quite considerably.

Just watched your video, your pretty good actually, the only thing your doing wrong is hitting the limiter too often.

There are times you could drop down a gear as well like on the hairpin, could go into 2nd and get the revs really high, but this will come as you get used to the tracks.

People have different styles, I like dropping into 3rd and 2nd a lot and using the handbrake a lot, other peope have a smoother play style and stay in higher gears.

Thanks Jim for the help but then why did others say it was bad.

Because sometimes the wheels will be spinning when your at high RPM. For example sometimes I handbrake into a hairpin, drop into second the revs go really high and then I'll be sitting at the top of the rev range (not on the limiter, about 1k off the limit) for a good few seconds with my speed still rising. If I change into 3rd too early then the engine would bog down and I'd loose a lot of speed.

Not sure if that makes sense.

I understand you.

Does anyone know of any good games to start with?

GT5 is a great way to improve your driving, esp if you try to get gold on all the tests and special events.

don't believe me then look at Lucas Ordonnez who was an MBA student and now a real pro driver at Le Mans on LMP2 class from just playing GT5. respect
