March Budget 2016

The IFS have published their distributional analysis of the budget. No big surprise as the budget is a big give away for the rich with precious little for the poor. Together with the pre-announced changes it adds up to more big hits for the poor while the rich face relatively small changes in both cash and %age terms.

A couple of those leapt out at me:

^ no effect on the richest, but a £1000+ annual cut for the poorest!

^ in every instance households with children more adversly affected than the equivalent childless household. "A budget for the next generation" said Mr Osborne

No surprise then, would you have expected differently from the tories?

Would be interesting to see the same graphs over longer periods, eg for the full last labour govermment, from the start of the tony blair years to 2019, from the early 80s to 2019.

I think we should challenge George Osborne, Iain Duncan Smith and a few others to spend a week in a minimum wage job. And I'd get IDS to spend it in a wheelchair....

Spend a week in someone's shoes and then you will truly see.

I'd increase that to spend a year in someone's shoes, it is the longer term consequences that grind us down, in my opinion.

Anything to comment on the fact we'll be giving less free money to those who do not work?
Do you see this as a bad thing?
Or just want to go blatantly off topic?

Why give people with disabilities money at all right?

Why give children who's parents are unemployed money for food or clothes or housing or toys?

People who do not work should not get money, is that your attitude?

It sounds like the longer those bars the better.

Nice fantasy. Going to give up their 5 star accommodation?

Why didn't Osborne just cut the Foreign Aid budget instead of shifting part of the burden onto the disabled and children?

Because foreign aid gives large benefits to us.
Amongst other things we get a lot if diplomatic advantages to it. Uk companies get a lot if the contracts.

Can be seen as an in investment both in real terms and in governmental influence to get countries to do our bidding.

What I want to know though is why is George so intent on reducing the deficit over so few years. Why couldn't he budget for a longer term reduction that would reduce the impact on the lower classes.
