Marines and Paras differences?

Seriously, you need to decide what you want and then ask which is the best way of accomplishing it. If you want specific advice on the marines then my email is in trust, feel free to ask whatever you want.

Hopefully I'm more sober than tonight..:)

My point is that out of all the important questions you should be asking, for such a massive long term life changing decision you seem focused on just which sf unit is cooler

The first post was more a combination of the differences between the Marines and the Paras, which as you say is a life changing decision, and then the SF bit was just more or less out of interest

Awesome, I'll have a think then maybe send you an email. Much appreciated!

You should join the RAF regiment

(just kidding)

Seriously though if I were you I'd go speak to recruiters for both, if you're currently at university then you'll have a university liaison officer visiting regularly from each of the army/navy/RAF - make an appointment to see both the army and the navy ones, discuss with them, read the promotional stuff they give you, get very very fit... go and attend a potential officers course at both then make your mind up.

No problem....I spent 18 years in service and will willingly answer any questions you have....I was a RM, but also completed the ML2 and SFSG amongst other things. Drop me a line if you want, it's no hassle as others will vouch for me I am sure. I never met a SBS commando that wasn't a Marine, but I know a few Marines that went on to the SAS,nso that probably indicates something.

:)

I never said anything about which one was harder? Just if they had different styles which one I'd prefer.

however I would rather not carry 80lb+ for 30+ miles often

Don't mean to be a nitpick but yes you did. If you're not ready to give all and you don't think you need to be incredibly fit then I doubt you're ready. You do come off as pretty immature and naive in many of your answers. If you take offence at what I say then you deserve to, I'm merely stating facts as I see them.

Would a Marine joining the SAS be frowned upon? Thanks for the help :)

I'm still finishing my A-Levels but had planedn on going to Uni, although if I could get in as an Officer without a degree I'd go for it (even joining up not as an officer but with a-levels wouldn't bother me as I don't know if I could face 3/4 years at Uni). I'll give Ballykinler a ring on Monday and organise a meeting I think... Cheers!

That's just preference? It's why I started this thread in the first place, I was wondering whether they both essentially did the same thing or if there were differences such as how much they usually carried and how fast they covered distances. I'm sure some people would consider it harder to move fast over 10 miles than pace yourself over 30? It was nothing to do with thinking you needer to be less fit for Paras or w/e. And I probably still am a bit naive and immature, no surprise there I'm only 17 atm so give it time ehy

I know this has been mentioned, and yes they won't be online at this hour, but go to an AFCO next week and speak to the guys there face to face, it will be the best possible advice.

I know lads who have failed the Marines and joined the paras and passed.

Ive never met anyone in the Marines who failed the Paras.

Enough said,

Both are generally very obnoxious until they mature with age.

Key difference for me is that paras thrive on not washing and therefore stink :p

I've got a mate who is one of the more intelligent people I know, and he's probably the the best fitness level of anyone I know (and I know someone who ran in the commonweath games!). To give you an idea at the weekends at uni he'd pack a rucksack full of kit to 'army weight levels' and go walking round the local countryside, cooking his own food and sleeping outside etc... So to most people a bit of a loon, but clearly dedicated to where he wanted to get to.

He is currently going through Officer training and looking to get into the Para's. He's said its the most physically and mentally gruelling stuff he's ever done.

Based on that, and considering you've said you wanted to be a pilot but now this sounds good, I'd be very careful about what you 'wish' for. Just go into this with your eyes open, its seriously hardcore stuff.
