Martin O'Neill resigns

The reasons will come over time, i can only say thats it's a sad when you see this happening.

Villa are a decent sized club, martins a decent bloke/manager, true football man, and all i see, he's been driven from the game.

When money, and thats all it is, sweeps the rug from under you time again against your peers.. days like this happen.

Says more about the state of the structure of the game than one mans disillusion.

The transfer system isn't the problem, it's the complete free for all that is:(

I,ve been a Villa supporter since before our division 3 days,in fact i went to school at St Mary,s C of E(1962 to 1966),where Aston Villa played their first game,we played naturally in Claret and Blue, and from their i take one thought, come what may i,ll support my team,no manager,or player are bigger than any club, though many have, and will continue to try to be so.

Feel sorry for him, trying to build up a team then it gets ripped apart, hes one of the last few decent mangers in the game.

This, time & time again we build a decent-ish squad then it gets ripped to pieces on transfer days.

Very sad to see O'Neill go, definitely was our best manager for quite some time!

Trust me, same thing at Wigan since we got in prem, losing big players but we cant really turn the money down but villa surely can.

Would be the ideal replacement for Ferguson at Man Utd if he retires at the end of the season. Can't really see anyone else other than him or Moyes.

Not really ideal - he's a good manager but has no experience of managing a "top" club?

Mourinho?

Mourinho could handle the "Ferguson dynasty" he has the ego and self belief. It is pretty taken as given he wants the job too.

I doubt whether O'Neil or Moyes could.

Listening to TalkSport and sone of the Villa fans on there are completely deluded.

Martin o neil isn't good enough for Villa
he hasn't done anything for the club
the squad he has built is poor
we'll get a better manager than him anyway

lolwut to all the above.

Some of them, not all of course, are as deluded as some of Ming ***** newcastle are cursed with. He took Villa who at the time were getting close and closer and closer to relegation each year and he turned you into a sucessful club who were almost top 4 and getting to cup finals. I liked the villa that o neil built I really expect the to free fall now to mid table and lose even more of your good players. Nothing against villa but sone of the people on sky/radio made me lol at the pain their delusion will bring them this year.

Curbishley would get my vote, although I think he's got a bit of history when it comes to throwing a paddy when the board sell players from under him.
For some reason I was also thinking Venables which is a bit strange given his age and the fact he hasn't been involved in club management for years....

Can't see Jol going for it, his flirtation with Fulham was just a way of forcing the hand of the Ajax board.

I rate O'Neill very highly and he could do great with great players. Just like Moyes with us, if they both had the money to get in great players they would be perfectly able to handle them and make both teams repetitively great. But to get great players you need the cash.

I say it's be a combination of the Milner situation and zero transfer funds that he has seemingly been given. Lerner has a lot of cash but doesn't seem to want to part with it over there.

Villa havn't made a signing at all so far this summer...for a club that should be pushing for top 4 finish this season, that's crazy. A lot like us, but Moyes is a genius with the cheap transfers. :D

Don't take any notice of them. Talk****e are nothing more than the News Of The World in radio format. Run by ****s, presented by ****s and listened to by ****s. They just cherry pick the supporters they allow on air in an attempt to distort the general feeling among fans.

ITV4 did the same before the Liverpool game last week. There are thousands upon thousands of match going folk who were livid when Rafa left and most gave him their full support. Listening to the interviews of our fans that ITV actually broadcast anyone that didn't know what went on at the club could be forgiven for thinking everyone hated him.

well kenny dalglish stuck his hands up when liverpool were looking for a manager .... seems hes got the fire back ... might interest him

Gutted for Villa fans, this will really impact their ability to match their 6th place from the last few seasons or even improve upon it. This is the last thing you want to see happen to a club a week before the season.

Shame for the neutrals as he was a great character, and definitely a wily opponent to face... :(

Any suggestion as to why yet, other than unhappiness at the whole Milner situation, and perhaps not getting all of the funds from his sale to spend?

My thoughts too, if you read about Lerners NFL team he gets a lot of mixed reviews in terms of spending etc, although you would have thought he would have been willing to go that little bit further considering how close we got to two trophies last season.

At the end of the day though it was O'Neill who signed Beye, Sidwell, Luke Young etc who are now sitting on the bench at costing us several hundred grand a week for nothing - you can't blame Lerner for wanting to offload some of this before bringing anyone else in.

I can't see us doing much at all this season - the Europa league will suck it out of us with such a small squad.

Am I missing something, team being ripped apart, 30-40man squad and one player probably going, and its fantastic business, and another player going, who has asked to go? Personally I'd hardly call that ripped apart, secondly he's most seasons he's been there made quite a few more than 2 changes a season so whats new.

I very much doubt if Young and Milner were sold he wouldn't be allowed to buy two decent replacements. But again I fail to see as a manager why you would pretend you could be competitive with the bigger clubs and why putting a bit of cash in the bank and not getting in debt is a bad thing.

THe bookies have it down as O'neill to take over for England, I might not be surprised by that, a truly awful squad chosen by Capello which has shown almost no sign of learning from the world cup mistakes(its called Barry) and making statements about being unable to work out the mindset of the players and seemingly being WAY out of his depth, I really don't know.

Wouldn't mind O'neill as manager at all, although, not sure if he'll show loyalty to Barry/Milner or feel sold out and drop them if he was the England manager, hopefully the latter one.

Thing is, does it sound right that Lerner is willing to sell Ashley and Milner, for probably not far off 60mil in players/cash, with Ireland whose an excellent player and potentially world class and in a position they'll need with Milner leaving, that Lerner is unwilling to buy a new winger to replace Young?

Lerner is certainly not being unreasonable selling players when the deals are good, and O'neill , if this is the reason, seems incredibly unreasonable/stupid to think Villa are really competing for the league and aren't somewhat of a selling club. Utd, Chelsea, Arsenal, LIverpool sell off big players from time to time, good business is good business and helps even the top teams, let alone teams with a lot less money.

IF he hasn't left for a specific job frankly, he's just being a big girl.

O'Neill will go to Celtic in a few months after Lennon gets sacked.

A cert IMO.

Lennon only has a 12 month rolling contract, unless they're skating the league by Christmas and still in Europe he'll be on a shoogly peg.

Apparently, O'Neill quit because he wanted all the money from the Milner deal to spend on players. The board told him to bolt.

Martin to take over from SAF!

That would be great - much preferable to Maureen imo (possibly less successful though)

Several years too early though :)

Why though, they are just recouping some of the money he's spunked over the years. The following all cost £3.5m+:

Downing
Dunne
Collins
Delph
Davies
Sidwell
L.Young
Cuellar
Harewood
Milner
Petrov
A.Young
Reo-Coker
Carew (swap for Baros who was a £5m player)
Heskey
Knight

So that's 16 players costing £3.5m or more, he bought a lot players and yes most of them were reasonable players not overly expensive who helped them build up a good squad it doesn't change the fact that the board will have pumped in more £££££ than they have recouped.

look at the £200m+ City have spent in the previous two summers (not counting this one as we dont know how effective it will be yet) to get one or two places above Villa - and not by very much - and you then see how reasonable the money AV is in reality

Even without that they must have paid for 3 or 4 of those from the profits from the Barry sale, so whats been spent is even less

Even AW spends more on that per player and he is a tight so and so hahaha (or bargain hunter if you want to look at it another way)

All your post really proves imo is that the owner/board HAVE to spend a lot more these days to start battling the big boys

City get crap start to the season, Mancini gets sacked - profit.

There is no chance he will go back to Celtic, why would anyone who could quite easily get a top job when it comes available. No guarantee of champions league football for the next few years as well.
