Mass Effect Requires Online Validation Every Ten Days to Function

I don't see the point in buying a game only to use an illegal crack on it as I said, may aswell go for the home run and download it, no?

That said though, it's wrong sure, but I don't give a toss.

Supporting the developers who make the game? Having a manual?

I'd like to know what your occupation is, and how you'd feel if people openly stole your work.

I'm a student and I don't work.

I'm not going to pay 20 notes to have a manual which is probably going to be available in PDF, the manual might have swayed me if the game had a thick one like KOTOR, but the validation crap just makes this change from a purchase to a download.

I love how you ignored his point about supporting the developers.

Games are a luxury, if you can't afford it then don't buy it.

I can't afford a Mac at the moment, I'm not going to steal it though and I'd class it as a luxury.

With games however I feel no remorse about downloading a game nor does it feel wrong. (despite that being the case)

I won't be buying the game even if it never gets put on the internet (speaking in theory) so if I want to download it I will.

I thought my opinion on that was already made clear with my previous post, I've already completed Mass Effect twice and I'm not going to bother paying again.

The PC version will be about £20-25? I paid £40 on the 360 so why should I buy it once again? That's already double the price! *

*by far the most retarded way of looking at it. :D

I wasn't talking about just Mass Effect, I was talking about any games you pirate.

You said "I don't see the point in buying a game only to use an illegal crack on it as I said, may aswell go for the home run and download it, no?" Sly gave you a couple of reasons people might buy the game, even if they crack it, and one of them is to support the developer.

Well, I've already established I'm not buying the game even if it never appears on the internet, so they aren't getting my money either way.

Well if Mass Effect gets Good reviews then I will buy it BUT I will crack it to bypass activation and checking so won't have securom running in the BG. So all in all I'll only be buying it when a crack is out...which should be a week before release as usual then :p

It depends, really.

For the big name games, I usually buy them unless I'm seriously skint and when it comes to not owning the game at all or downloading it then obviously you can imagine where the temptation lies.

The only 360 game I can see myself purchasing until Fable 2 / Gears 2 is Ninja Gaiden 2, until then none interest me enough to make me want to spend money on them.

Also for PC, I can't think of any games out this year I'm going to buy due to lack of interest, aside from Left 4 Dead and possibly Far Cry 2. (unless it blows)

Reading the thread won't change the law in your favour.
Assuming you're downloading on usenet or some other "one-way" medium, it's legal.

If, like most people, you use torrents it is not legal as you're distributing.

Edit: Also, downloading ISOs specifically could be nitpicked as being illegal as...

Copyright in a work is infringed by a person who, without the licence of the copyright owner—
(a) makes,
(b) imports into the United Kingdom,
(c) possesses in the course of a business, or
(d) sells or lets for hire, or offers or exposes for sale or hire,
an article specifically designed or adapted for making copies of that work, knowing or having reason to believe that it is to be used to make infringing copies.

Edit 2: In fact, I just found another piece of the legislation that says: -

(1) The copying of the work is an act restricted by the copyright in every description of copyright work; and references in this Part to copying and copies shall be construed as follows.
(2) Copying in relation to a literary, dramatic, musical or artistic work means reproducing the work in any material form.
This includes storing the work in any medium by electronic means.

I'm not sure this counts for downloading but I am sure a slick solicitor could twist it to mean that.

Does that count even if you disable uploading? (which usually affects your DL speed)

I personally use SSL encryped Usenet servers however, torrents are too slow/have an element of risk.

Back in 2002 (or whatever year Signs got released) I downloaded it from Kazaa, or whatever and got a letter from some company about it!

Yup, it technically would because you would be distrubting the work.

and distributing is what you get bent over for ain't it? (more so than the downloading at least)

Well according the law (as I've just found out). There doesn't seem to be anything wrong with downloading (maybe, if they proved it was on servers outside of the UK, but I'm not lawyer so I don't know for sure) but yes, uploading is the problem.
