Massive 7.8 magnitude earthquake In Turkey

Could be looking at a thousand deaths here across both countries given how bad their architecture is in place and the size of the area affected by that quake. It'll be such a slow and long feed because the dmg looks monumental. Sad day.

Damn, it does look pretty bad there. Buildings still falling down over the last couple of hours, presumably, due to damaged caused by the quake in the night. Horrible stuff. :(

A 0.2 increase in the magnitude is doubling the energy released. I never knew that. Each whole number is 31.6 increase of energy released, jesus.

As well as the aftershocks that come with such events.

Not sure for how many hours afterwards aftershocks can still be expected to occur.

Awful. My family in Cyprus felt it, buildings shook there as well.

Edit: they've just had a bad aftershock again...

I think I heard on the news thay'd had 70 aftershocks already, with the biggest of those in the mid 6's. This is a major movement!
This happened about 10 hours ago. That is 7 aftershocks per hour.

That is going to really hamper rescue attempts. You clear some rumble, the aftershock hits and you are back to square one.

Bad news. It will be an order of magnitude more than that, if not two.

"Turkish president Tayyip Erdoğan said that the earthquake that struck in the early hours was the country’s largest disaster since 1939, adding that 2,818 buildings collapsed as a result, Reuters report.

The 1939 Erzincan earthquake that Erdoğan referenced is believed to have killed 33,000 people. The 7.6 magnitude İzmit earthquake in 1999 is thought to have killed more than 17,000 people."

Yeah, numbers are going to go up rapidly I think. Hopefully there's a lot of outside help on the way. Grim.
