Massive 7.8 magnitude earthquake In Turkey

It's going to be a brutal death toll, 10k+ wouldn't surprise me, even with the advances in technology, aid and response times since 1999.

I hope we (as in not just the UK - but Europe in general) send humanitarian support.

EU has mobilised more than 10 search and rescue teams to assist Turkey

More than 10 search and rescue teams from the EU have been mobilised in the wake of the major earthquake that has hit Turkey, a spokesperson for the European Commission told reporters on Monday.

“Urban Search and Rescue teams have been quickly mobilised from Bulgaria, Croatia, the Czech Republic, France, Greece, Hungary, Malta, the Netherlands, Poland and Romania to support the first responders on the ground,” the European Commission said in a statement.

Italy, Spain and Slovakia have offered their rescue teams to Turkey as well.

Reuters reports the EU said it was also ready to support those affected in Syria, but said it had not yet received a request from the country to activate the EU’s civil protection mechanism, which coordinates assistance from EU and other European countries

A quick look at Met Office suggests feels like temps down to approx -7C overnight this week and barely breaking zero in the day. :(

Indeed. Hence my somewhat sad statement of surviving the collapse might not be such a blessing.

I fear we're going to see some significant numbers :(

Hopefully they will revisit their building regs - some civil engineering friends of mine were quite shocked at the quality of construction there.

That said 7.8 is so violent that it would require very western / Japanese level standards of construction which adds a lot of cost too :(

Looking at the photos online, I cannot see how this will not be a 10,000+ death-toll. Such a horrific event.
Did anyone see the post a couple of days ago by an Dutch guy predicting the quake? Claims its down to planetary body related activities... Is that a pseudo-science or a real thing?!

Think I saw somewhere that claimed that poster makes random predictions often, and just happened to get this one right. So I doubt what he claims caused this would be accurate if true.

But yeah, it's looking bleak over there. :(

That bloke predicts everything all the time, he's a bit of a nutter.

I saw some pictures a short while ago and it looks like building regs have definitely played a part. A number of identical buildings had all collapsed in the middle of a city, where other buildings around them were still standing.

That design looked like it had fallen like a pack of cards :(

Unfortunately no point looking at numbers now. Going to be thousands and thousands looking at the architecture and destruction

It's like the simpsons, when you pump out enough content, eventually you're going to have some stuff that comes true.
