Massive Car insurance costs?

Always start looking at comparison site renewal prices 21 to 28 days prior to your policy expiring. This is when you'll get the best deal, leaving it until you get your renewal (I notice insurers have sneakily stopped telling you what it'll be until the last possible moment) marks you as someone who doesn't plan ahead & so is considered more of a risk.

They are going to price themselves out of the market. Admiral have always been bad afaik.
I read that...... but has not been my experience. I have been with them for over a decade covering multiple cars on a 2 car policy (Punto, fiat Coupe, pug 308, nissan 350Z, nissan QQ and now my Jag Ipace ( and still the old 308 as our 2nd car) and no other company could touch the quotes they gave me, albeit with a little haggling

as for it being a con. I know that is the fashionable take but I am not convinced. it will take 65 years with my premium on my ipace as it is now for Admiral to pull in the value of my vehicle. and that is forgetting the car I could hit or the personal injury I could cause if I went out now and had a big crunch .

Yes but it's a known cost and therefore they can price accordingly, with cars they know what your car is worth but have no idea what you might then go on to write off for someone else.

I'd say it's also a lot less likely for a house to burn down than for someone to have an expensive bump.
Was just going to say that, I reckon if you look at amount of crashes vs claims on house insurance it's going to be at least 50 times more.

My renewal quote in today from LV, from £270 to £325. This is on a 10 year old XJ, parked on drive and full no claims. I suspect I'll just suck it up from what I see in this thread. I remember paying over £300 a few years ago so looks like a few years of lower costs (COVID etc) are gone.

always phone up and complain, say you are thinking of leaving. I have had one car or another for over 25 years and have never ever failed to get some cash off my renewal, often significant.
another thing you have to be wary of. we bought our nissan QQ for 12.5ish K 8 years ago
they dont automatically reduce the value of the car on their system as it gets older (or Admiral didn't anyway).
obviously if we come to claim 7 years later and the car was written off THEN they would value it.

simply by me updating the value of the car to what it was really worth knocked money off.

This!
They tried to charge me more this year and I mentioned it was more than last year and would just leave.

"Oh I'll just put you on hold, oh the good news is we can do it for last years price!" - yeah why didn't you do that in the first place then d*ck! Or better still make it less now that I've got another years ncb/older/experience...

Comprehensive cover for my 2017 M240i ranged about £500-550 last year, and this year it starts from £1050!!! I've not changed any details, just let CTM add another year to all the parameters! Same with Confused.com. I am speechless! It looks wrong, so I'll wait for my renewal with Admiral to come through.
Renewal with Admiral came through at £833. I'm taking it! That's only a 51% increase, and I could only find cheapest to be around £950 with a reputable insurance company.

Renewal in this morning from LV - no personal changes - £700 to £1120

Tesla Model Y with business miles/Ltd company ownership. Crazy increase. Now a hour or so messing around to see if we can get that down.

i would still call them even if you are happy with the renewal and argue that it is a 50% increase.... i genuinely would be surpirsed if they dont shave at least £50 quid off just to get you off the phone!.

PS that scares the hell out of me, Admiral gave me a quote of just over £500 for my ipace this year, this was before getting the car as i would have gone to plan B had it of been insane. I hope that wasnt a sweetner to lock me in to the car before they get their pound of flesh next year!.

I assume because Teslas are the new rep/exec commuters car of choice now? (12/14 of our company cars are Tesla at our place).

BIK is 2% this year so that's a huge plus. Also the 100% First Year Allowance is a big money saving write down for companies if they buy them.

After an hour on the phone to Admiral yesterday, I've managed to combine home and car insurance - they wanted ~£65 to cover me for 40 days which will then match up with home renewal date in October. I just wanted to pay for a year but apparently it doesn't work like that, but the guy on the phone did a rough calculation and reckoned it would make the full year come to about £595...I very much doubt it as the cheapest quote I've had is £840 :D

No renewal quote through yet but I'm now close enough to put the actual start date into comparison sites. Cheapest is £766...with a £1k excess and my mum as a named driver

Unless I fancy Hastings black box offering which would knock it down to £550 and £300 excess but I'd rather crap in my hands and clap than have to remember never to break a speed limit, corner too fast or accelerate too quickly in case they cancel my policy.
