So, the new series of MasterChef starts tonight on BBC One and it looks like they've 'borrowed' the format from MasterChef Australia and ditched the previous elimination-based format.

I've never seen the Australian version but I know it was generally raved about in the media and the foody press, so hopefully it will inject some life into what was becoming a slightly tired format; I don't know about anyone else, but I got bored of watching the usual parade of incompetents and started watching the last two series' around a third of the way in to avoid them.

On the upside it should give us more chance to see some cooking and get to know a little more about our potential MasterChefs. On the downside, it's also in HD so you'll get to suffer Fat Greg's chins wobbling in all their glory.

Anyone able to shed some light on the new format? Know anyone who applied for this year?

aussie format is pretty good if not better.

basically they take loads of people down to 24 and then do skills tests and stuff to get them down to a 12?

I've never watched this before, but recently have started to get interest in cooking.

Who are these two guys

Do people just come on and cook....then get put through to the next round? What do they win?

I am angry already, the lad copying Kenny Atkinson of Great British menu with the Mackrel wrapped in bread!!!!!

I was about to post that....

Greg hadn't seen it before? HA! He must watch his competitor TV shows...it was the final dish for the fish course ffs...

The mackeral wrapped in bread - although a straight copy from Great British Menu (minus some gooseberry relish!) still showed some great culinary ability and I can't recall seeing any purely original dishes that were successful either!

I'm suprised Greg & FourEcks had never heard of it before - I'm not sure if they were saying that for a more interesting show or just completely oblivious to a fellow bbc gastronomy show

PLEASE No more chicken wrapped in parma ham stuffed with pesto/cheese.
