Maths question

There's nothing wrong with bettering yourself. Some of the remarks in this thread are just pathetic. However one might argue that the OP is leaving revision a little late. The BBC bitesize site is absolutely great for KS3 Maths.

People saying he shouldn't be in uni need to get stuffed. He's right, what has being bad at maths have anything to do with going to uni? I failed maths at GCSE but have a 2.1 in computer networking. What exactly is your point?

The guy needed a hand with a question, at least he is taking the initiative to catch up on his maths skills before an entry test.

The OP seems to fail in understanding what fractions fundamentally are (I don't mean to be critical). Therefore, even that won't help.

edit:

I take that back, the previous parts actually lead up to the adding/subtracting part quite well.

Hello my name is nightrider1470, let me tell you about my life.

I am interested in drama and I want to be the manager of my local McDonalds, I also like alcohol ( not in moderation). Also I don't like mainstream music, probably my favourite artist is Nero. I also signed up to a few overclocking forums cos I am nerd like :D. I watch Anime, ( if you don't like me then turn 360 degrees). I have like a University interview tomoz, probbly won't be serion but maths is quite mainstream and far too cliche. I am thinking that in the future I might get a girlfriend but I have aspergers ( not diagnosed but I when I was 15 I read the curious mystery of the dog in the night time). The best thing that has happened in my life is when I bought minecraft, I totally built a house and then I died because of a creeper lololol. Hate it when people don't understand nerd talk ha ha ha ha. People always think I am clever because I am applying for the worst University in the country to do drama, 10% of the students graduate and 1% of them earn more than like 20 fiftheth pounds. If you don't like me then you are racist because I am not black.

Gotta love OC, you guys are proper charitable :D

Anyways, if you've got a fraction a/b, then the top part is called the numerator and the bottom part the denominator. If you multiply the numerator and the denominator by the same amount, then you have the same fraction so a/b = ax/bx for all values of x (except 0!).

To add two fractions together you need to manipulate them so they have the same denominator, then you can just add the numerators and simplify. This means that to add any two fractions together, a/b + c/d, the easiest thing to do is multiply both by the denominator of the other, e.g.

a/b + c/d = ad/bd + bc/bd = (ad + bc)/bd

You can then simplify.

So: 1/3 + 2/6 = (1*6)/(3*6) + (2*3)/(3*6) = 6/18 + 6/18 = 12/18

12 and 18 (obviously) both divide by 6, so the final answer is 2/3

1) You're not funny.
2) You're not big.
3) You're not clever.
4) Grow up, this isn't a school playground.

Edit: And just to clarify my thoughts on this thread, when the day comes where we criticise a person for wanting to better themselves it's a very sad day indeed. I'd much prefer the OP is asking this question, albeit at the last minute, than sitting on the dole for the rest of his life sponging off the state.
