Maximus V Gene Preview/Review 8 Pack style

Just installing Asus motherboard drivers now. Not an overly pleasant experience so far. Installation in general with Windows 7 has been a nightmare so far.

No matter how good the components just an hour or so installing Windows is enough to make me want to throw it out the window.

What is the issue? installing the board drivers?

Yeah what is the Issue?? I have XP, Vista -64 and 7 64 on mine and all installed fine. Its probably a driver issue with Intel SATA controller.

I hear using a nhd14 makes the 1st pcie slot
Very very tight - with back of gpu touching clips

Should I consider the nh12 cooler instead

Or use the 2nd pci-e slot ?

I think 2nd one is 8x pci-3 so shouldntbe a bottleneck for any current cards ?

I have a gtx480 soc ATM

Correct 8x pci 3.0 with Ivy so will not bottleneck as you suggest. Not sure about your cooler question though I dont have that cooler to test.

thanks :)

can anyone recommend a good mid-range large-ish cooler than I can still use 4 DIMM slots (with Samsung RAM so very low profile) - and have a decent gap between back of GPU and heatsinkn please ?

and also - any possible space issues in a standard sized case (550d I'm considering)

ie you often see a length of gpu max that the case can fit - but if the PCI-E slot is a bit higher than normal (due to a smaller gap between bottom of cpu mount and pci-e 1) - in the case - if that makes sense

thanks - I'm still undecided between the V-Pro, UD5 and Gene-Z

but since I don't intend to SLI etc - I'm very very tempted with the Gene-Z :) looks a loverly board

I got the gene z, it seems a solid board so far, I have 4.6 out of my 2500k and I have not even really tried, it seems quite an easy board to get on with.

Here's a pic of it setup in my case, fractal xl.

Please keep the pics so they are a little smaller :) (1024 or so wide)

nice :) thanks - how do you find the Fractal XL ?

I fancied the R3 - but my GPU is lsightly too long (480 SOC = 300mm) - I think the XL would be ok but I've heard its not so good for air cooling

leaves me with not much choice other than a 550d - or the Coolermaster 690 ii advanced

I really like the fractal XL, it just works, nice and big, plenty of room for anything you fancy, I modded mine for water cooling and tbh it's the best £85 I've spent on a case but as the price has gone up I would more than likely pick the Xigmatek elysium if I was wanting a good sized case, can't really comment on the air cooling side of things, the fans that come with the case are not up to much really from what I could tell of them so you would most likely replace them which soon add's up.

I have not used the other boards mate but I do know the Gene now very well and it performs very well, incredibly fast, an amazing overclocker and is very stable with both Sandy and Ivy.

thats glad to hear thanks, as my Gene is on the way and should be here tomorrow

16gb Samsung Green, Gene-Z V, 3770k :)

I have this MB in a 500R and I have to admit that the removable hard drive bay for long GPUs does not look useful as the PCI-E slots on the GENE sit too high (certainly the first at least) for it to make a difference. In my eyes the GPU in the first slot would be bashing the back of the optical drive bays...
