The big water supply from Wales to England is from Elan Valley to Birmingham.

It's a marvel of Victorian engineering, from the dams to the gravity fed water supply.

If you're ever over that way, it's pretty spectacular to see it.

I had one of these when travelling around South America. It's supposed to filter both bacteria and viruses (which most filters don't). It worked well, apart from when we got stuck on a pass in the altiplano having to spend the night at over 4,500 after surfing the day before. Obviously there was no-where to fill up.

Don't forget that all water (H and O) was created 13 billion years ago! There is no new water!

Regarding the topic at hand, why have the chosen this method over desalination plants? We are an island nation (though we lack cheap energy).

Maybe because they're expensive to build and consume humungous amounts of energy?

Not even that old its thought most arrived later from asteroid/cometary collisions likely during the Late Heavy Bombardment about 3.8 bn years ago (early earth was far too hot for volatiles not to evaporate away into space)
