Mazda Rx-8 What to look for when buying ??

Don't be so ridiculous.. you have to be really 'special' to flood it!

I must be special as I managed to flood mine several times. All but one time I sorted it with the foot to the floor method. One time though I had to get Mazda out to pull the plugs and do some jiggery pokery. Was a major pain that day actually as I missed a business meeting because of it.

Meh, there is nothing to add to this lot really. My diary of ownership is in my sig (but missing the latest updates), although my latest issue is the worst case scenario and after having a hot compression test the compression is just below Mazda tolerances on 1 rotor and just above on the other. It is on 55,500 miles of which I have done over half of, flooded once due to a flat battery. Apart from that it has never had any issues which have left me stranded, still runs OK now, just down on power especially on a motorway run and struggles to start when warm even with a good battery and uprated starter motor.

Nice blog. Costs aren't too bad IMO, my Golf GTI cost £800 alone one service and has become pretty mundane to drive after a while, every other car on the road seems to be a Golf. Fine for just getting from A to B and doing trips to Tesco...

Doesn't mention in your blog the coils being changed at 30k?

Yes it does ;)

Servicing/Repairs @ 31,000 miles.

Engine mounts in need of replacing since last service. No luck with Mazda chasing a good will payment as I am the 3rd owner on this car and they will only help for the 1st 2 owners!
Purchased 2 new engine mounts as well as new spark plugs, coil packs and HT leads from the US at a fraction of the cost.

Fitted at Bourne Road Mazda, helpful as ever and even gave me a £20 per hour labour discount for some reason! Also had the car MOT'ed whilst it was there.

I bought one brand new in 2004 when they were the talk of the town. Sold it 18 months later and bought an Audi A8 4.2 V8 to save money on fuel/oil.

In all seriousness, having owned one I don't think I'd have another at any price. The handling was sublime but it wasn't very comfortable, felt far too clinical (like it was electric), wasn't very fast in a straight line, was too finniky (would flood if you didn't do things right), and it squeaked and rattled.

For £4k now, well, I guess they make a decent used buy if you go in with your eyes wide open and fully expect big fuel bills, and potentially expensive engine re-builds. I just think they are fundamentally dull with their power delivery when compared to the likes of 330s, Z4s, 350Zs, etc.
I just notice you made an RX8 review thread (13th Feb 2006 :p )
