Mclaren-Honda MP4-30 *** 2015 Launch Thread

Jesus the red from the side looks awful as it disappears at the hideous looking wing mirrors, from the top you can see it continue but from the side it looks utterly stupid. If you had to have it I would have kept the red as the edge between top/side so it didn't just disappear, but I wouldn't have put the red there to begin with.

Disappointed they didn't try something newer and more interesting.

Look at the difference at the rear and the front wing.
Clear to see that the Honda is made to fit the McLaren compared to last year where the Mercedes was strange enough was made to git the Mercedes!

HMm, are those sidepods absolutely huge compared to Williams/Merc. I'm bad at finding comparison shots, what were Mclaren sidepods like last year? IIRC Merc's started small and got maybe smaller, Williams started quite big but at some stage they reduced it and shrunk the packaging quite a lot in the process. While the back end looks tight the sidepods look somewhat huge by comparison.

Then I think same applies a little to the rear anyway, last year Merc started tight at the back, got tighter, Williams again started off much further back in packaging but got tighter end of season and from what I've seen maybe looks tighter than the Mclaren.

Sidepods/rear end look much more substantial on the Mclaren than Merc/Williams of end of last year.

EDIT:- in talking about sidepods I'm more talking intake size as opposed to overall size. The outside seems relatively well sculpted/small but the intake still looks somewhat huge.

Like everyone else, confused by the livery.
As for the rest, other than tight rear, you can't go by much as all the cars will look different by Melbourne.

Are they hoping that livery will make them fast again like in 2007/2008?

New sponsor, new engine supplier, and we get almost the exact same livery as the Vodafone McLaren Mercedes....: /

Comparing sidepods to the Merc pics from launch last year the intake does look far larger, they take a less aggressive curve into the body and meet the body a lot lower down. Hard to call but I think the Mclaren looks a lot less tight all the way around the sidepod than start of last season Merc and at some stage Merc last year made everything tighter still.

Of course they should have several different packages and I'd be launching maybe the least aggressive one because you'd want to start testing with the most cooling and see how the engine does, tighten it up if the engine is going okay rather than the Red Bull method of going over aggressive, setting the car on fire and cutting away parts of the body work time and time again to cool the thing :p

As dull looking as I expected. How big a job-lot of chrome paint did McLaren buy?

I guess if it's quick the livery doesn't matter - still, disappointed they didn't take the opportunity to really break with the Mercedes era and establish a proper identity. Still makes them look like a Mercedes wannabe.

BTW - what is the black square on the side of the airbox/engine cover on the right side of the overhead view?

Nice to see that the West McLaren Mercedes is back in F1... Oh... hang on...

Someone posted this on another forum..

Notice btw the car is missing brake ducts. I'm looking forward to what they are hiding.

intriguing.

More than likely, they needed to get it together for the photoshoot. Seen many missing bits on cars over the years. Brake ducts, driveshafts, rear crash structure, steering arms.

Bolt it together to make it look ready, take the photos, take it apart again and finish it off.

BTW - what is the black square on the side of the airbox/engine cover on the right side of the overhead view?

Camera. Can see it sticking out on the other shots.

Looking back through past recent cars, it looks most like the 2009 model to me.

Are AkzoNobel still a sponsor?

They came up with the chrome paint years back...if they are still a sponsor they may have had some influence into sticking with the chrome paint.

Yeah it won't be genuine wings or floor or diffuser. Stuff will be missing and other stuff blocked off.

All it really is when you launch before testing is a livery launch, and in that respect this is a complete flop.
