Mclaren MP4-27 launch thread

2 cars revealed, 2 tightly packed rear ends. I wonder how many other teams are going to "idiotically copy a design from one of the slowest cars on the grid"?

:D

To maximize airflow to the rear wing and upper surface of the diffuser - I would.

I'd ensure that I wasn't running a Cosworth engine and had a gearbox that wasn't made of chocolate first though. :D

they dont line up properly but you get the idea

even if you line up the front of the cockpit the rear of the cockpit isnt lined up etc so theres no point trying to :P

i dont know if its just the angles of the photo thats changed or if the parts of the car are all slighly moved about

The cockpit opening dimensions are fixed AFAIK. But those shots aren't from directly above so its going to be to do with the angles etc.

Either way, shows that they have a made a not insignificant reduction in wheelbase this year.

Black wheels too. Not sure on them TBH.

Do I spot a Ron-ism?

Whilst I was expecting it to look more radical I'm glad it has a lower tub and nose, should also make it easier for the drivers (Hamilton :p) to see their front wing.

I also thought the L shaped side pods would have been developed further but the new regulations make it kind of pointless as that gap is now where the exhaust has to be.

Good point about the side pods, I hadn't though of that.

Diffuser is a mock up. They always are. It will have zero relevance to the actual one that will be run on the car. At least they haven't completely boxed it off like they did last year

Expect the same of the front wing too.

Alright mate, read this earlier and am just watching an interview with Lewis on the beeb's website in which he says that nothing has been put on the car for the show and that what's on there is part of the car.

Whether he is stating that 100 percent of everything you see is wysiwyg I'm not sure but he makes it sound as much.

The main point of those L-shaped sidepods was to funnel air into the diffuser area - which doesn't exist any more, so it would hinder them more than it would help. This is exactly the same reason that definitely isn't the current spec front wing, as that in turn used those inner half-circle wing planes to channel air into the L-shaped sidepod gully.

All of these car launches are pretty pointless except to laugh at **** teams, as 80% of what you see is either old crap or basic trim.

Yeh I miss the U shape pods. They looked cool!

I think I read in scarbs, that if they wanted to keep those and gain an aero advantage they'd have to seriously undercut the U, and space would be a limitation, so perhaps they chose not to go the route for fear of complex packaging = heat nightmare, ball ache to work on.

Can someone answer a question.. Are they angling the exhaust up to blow the underside of the rear wing? Can't tell from the pictures and screen on the phone :p

so out with the blown diffusers and in with the blown rear wings :p

Probably, I expect most if not all the teams to do that, or blow the winglets adjacent to the wheel to grab some extra downforce.

Wouldn't make sense to just go with a straight forward design ;)

If I remember correctly this year is the first year since pirelli came in that the teams can set their own weight distribution isn't it?

I seem to remember the first year the teams all agreed to have a fixed balance so that everyone was starting from the same place but that for this year they could do what they liked.

Just found the link from last year
