Mcleish quits Birmingham

Dismal? And what have you won in the past 15 years? I'd rather have the excitement of regular promotion and relegation battles than mid-table mediocrity for year after year after year :p

In Birmingham's case, what have they won in the past 100 years....2 league cups....?

If you genuinely believe it's better to be yo-yoing up and down the leagues, then I salute you, but personally I'd rather that we enjoyed the "mediocrity" of finishing in the top six in 3 of the past 4 seasons, 2 Wembley appearances the season before last, and the stability of playing in one of the top leagues in the World.

I hope the "excitement" of battling with the likes of Brighton and Hove Albion and Doncaster Rovers is enough for the DISMAL Blues this coming season.

I still cannot believe that if he was frightened off by fans reaction to Mclaren he is going to go through with a deal for Mcliesh...their fans forums are in full on meltdown.

its even more bizaree that lerner wouldnt deal with MArk Hughes because of his resignation at fulham but seems quite happy to interview Mcleish

its got disaster written all over it...it will really split the fans and if results go badly it will create a terrible atmosphere at the club

It is already starting, If this goes through they won't even need to kick a ball to get a bad fan reaction.

Seriously cannot believe Randy would ever think of doing this at all :/

An interview with a 'rep' of Brum city was on BRMB this morning, he basically said that their ex manager hasn't got a legal leg to stand on. Its in the contract that player purchasing and staff hiring / firing is outside of his area, although the managers input is always welcomed.

So basically .. he agreed to the terms, then toys out the pram time when the board/club do something he doesn't like.

Don't forget that Mcleish built a VERY good defence cheaply, one of the best in the league that happily coped with the best teams in the league on multiple occasions. The midfield had some grit and quality, they just had no actual strikers and by the sounds of it Mcleish had two or three very good deals lined up for strikers but the owners wouldn't follow through at all.

Had Brum gotten Zamora or Dembele, who were both excellent when not injured this season I seriously doubt Brum would have been relegated.

The difference one striker would have made to brum would be huge frankly, so not convinced he actually did do a bad job there.

He's a good manager, seemingly, he does seem to have been screwed with failed loan signings pushed off on his number 2, though supposedly those loans were last minute deals when backing for the strikers wasn't given.

Its all a bit of he said she said rubbish, however the fact Brum's defence was solid and well organised isn't disputable, we all saw that.

With no decent attacking options up top, the whole team played pretty compact defensive football though (rightly so might i add..), would their defence of looked so hot had they been played in a team looking to be more progressive in their tactics?

Personally, I wouldn't call Johnson for £5 million cheap.

Chris Samba for £400k and Ryan Nelson for free. That's cheap.

Well Dann is being talked about in the 10-15mil range, and Johnson is a target but Brum seem to be suggesting it will take something closer to 15mil to get him away from the club.

Samba was cheap, Johnson is cheap, 30mil for Rio, not cheap, 7-8m for Squillaci...... not cheap :p

Brum do have some offensive players, its just the strikers are crap. Gardner, Larrson, Bowyer, absolute inability to score goals doesn't mean they don't try at all.

Arsenal conceded more from set pieces than open play, so despite quite an offensive team it was when we had time to get everyone back and defend properly that we conceded the most goals. A good defence, is a good defence, is a good defence. A team that plays defensively, with a poor defense will both concede a lot and not score much, one with a great defence will not concede a lot and maybe not score much, a great offensive team with a superb defence can also not concede much at all.

Whichever way you look at how they play, their defence was very very good, plenty of teams try and chuck 10 men behind the ball against a top 4 team and still lose 6-0, Brum managed a bunch of very low scoring games, or no score draws against those teams.

Hell, look at Liverpool, hardly defensive but with Torres up top Liverpool were a bit rubbish and not scoring a load with a completely out of form striker, and the only real striker, they switched him for a completely inform striker and the team could suddenly score and win.

maybe if he'd concentrated more on the attack than the defence, they wouldn't have gone down?

i listened to a bit of brmb last night and one caller said something about mcleish getting the nod for 3 signings yet he still left?

Heard on the radio this morning that McLeish to Villa is almost a done deal. Can't help but feel it's not a good move for anyone.

It's funny listening to Villa fans on the television saying they need a manager who can "win them the League again" :)

I think after the last few years they should be grateful for any minor achievements

To be fair, their squad needs an overhaul and I don't quite know what kind of backing McLeish will have been promised but I think they need a big squad turnover...

Hmmmmmmmm

Those who are saying mcleish is blue through and through should remember that essentially he has chosen to come to Villa. If you ignore the 3.5 years at birmingham then he is on paper no worse than any of the other candidates and a good deal better than some.

Villa were effectively shot in the foot by Martinez saying no, a decision I beleive he will live to regret. Any other "Top" manager isn't going to be happy being second choice and is unlikely to consider any approach unwelcome, ruling out Moyes or anyone else who the fans are likely to actually want.

So, you're faced with a choice of manager that no one will really approve of. If the board beleive that Mcliesh is the best candidate, why not do the unthinkable?

Now it looks like Mcleish has gone, we need to appoint a manager ourselves and stop wasting time. I like Mcleish a lot but his gone now and the board have to put there energy bringing in the right man.
