Haven't you already got all the equipment to try it with? Unless you want to save on a optical cable or your amp lacks multiple optical outputs I would just connect the x360 straight to the amp. Should save some hassle although you will have to change amp settings when you want to use the xbox.

sid

well sid the plot thickens :D
i aint got an amp yet. i wouldnt know what to buy lol.
my tv sound could be run through an optical cable to amp with optical in ?
and i could connect my xbox via left an right audio on the amp?
im only going to be using headphones so 5.1 doesnt interest me.

Yup that would work, Are you looking for an AV amp or a intergrated stereo one? Most AV ones will come with multiple digital inputs/outputs you see.

hi sid thanks for your help i know im not making it easy lol.
when you say intergrated stereo i am thinking you mean FM radio?
if thats the case then i just need an AV amp.
so as my tv has optical out, will i get to hear the built in freeview out of the amp hooked up this way ?>

You'll need an AV Amplifier, not a stereo integrated amplifier/receiver. Former is multi-channel, surround sound decoding (Pro-Logic, DD and DTS) with various audio and video switchinginputs & outputs.

A Stereo integrated amplifier/receiver (receiver means it has a built in tuner) just has stereo inputs and outputs. No video switching.

Source--->AV amplifier---->Speakers

so

X-Box---->AV amplifier---->Speakers
and
DVB---->AV amplifier----->Speakers

Use digital outputs from your sources, you'll get better sound quality as the analogue sections from those types of things are generally low quality. The AV amplifier.

You don't necessarily need to use the AV amp for video switching.

My AV amp only offers video switching in composite, This is clearly too low quality.
If you have a half decent DVD that upscales to 720p via HDMI or something I would just use that instead. Theres no cheap AV amp that will do that for sure. For SD sources you can use the amp to switch but for HD sources, unless your planning on a uber AV amp, i wouldn't bother frankly

True if you've got less devices than the video inputs on the TV, you can just go direct for the video. But for all audio, send to the AV amplifier. Also send monitor/TV video and audio output from the av amplifer to the TV, that way av amplifer OSD is shown on the TV (if it has this feature) and any audio sent to the av amplifier is also sent to the TV.

Saves switching inputs on the TV itself. Either way a learning remote with macros would be useful.

bought 2 cables this week:

i also bought the following RF cable to i can watch my tv's built in freeview whilst my humax box is recording a different freeview channel:

again this cable improved my built in freeview picture a lot more than i could have wished for and i'm very happy with it.

This is the amp i am going to buy (£180)

i wish to connect my xbox360 to it via the left and right audio cables.
also my freeview box has left and right audio out and i wish to connect this to the amp also. looking at the picture i have provided below would my freeview audio out connect to the "video" as i can only see "aux" on the front of the amp.

PS- i only use headphones so optical doesnt interest me.....

Do you want multi-channel or just stereo? Do you need multi-channel processing? Video switching?

Those inputs are all just line level stereo analogue inputs. Fine for a Hi-Fi setup, but not so for multi-channel. I have a 2 channel Hi-Fi system (CDP/DAC/Pre/multiple poweramps) and HT (HTPC/AV Pre-Amp/multiple poweramps/subwoofer/7 speakers)

You didn't need to spend that much for cables.

movingtables,

Now that I've got my TV mounted, I'm in the market for a decent scart cable :D

Thing is though, where its wall mounted and quite cosy against the wall, traditional scarts won't fit. I've tried :(

How flexible is the Ixos? Does it keep a low profile when fitted?

Failing that, can anyone else recommend me a good quality, 'low profile' scart that would meet my requirements :)

Cheers,

SW.

Hi Sam.
The scart Cable I have is of excellent quality, however looking at the rear of my TV it does petrude out when connected.
I'm not aware of a scart cable that does not petrude out a bit when connected so I'm not sure how your going to get around this.
I've lost track of this thread lol, what tv did you get in the end ?

EDIT: I see you went for the: 26" Sony KDL-26S2010.
Hope your happy with it. :)

Here's a couple of my Sony S2010 displaying windows. The Samsung and Sony are both good in VGA mode as they offer 1:1 mapping, and it's a 26" screen as well so it should give a fair idea of what you could expect. I do think that 2-3 metres away could be pushing it though unless larger icons/text are used.

Hey stu.artd,

I've got my Sony up and running now and connected to my PC via a DVI to HDMI cable, but the picture I get on the TV isn’t great and doesn't completely fit the screen and where it is using the HDMI lead, you can’t adjust the picture :(

Could you tell my how you set your PC/TV up and what cable/adaptors you used to get such a great view ;)

Cheers,

SW.
