Looking to get a mech kb myself so I'll jump in on this if that's cool. Does it give you a good idea because I've heard it's a bit different handling a whole keyboard as opposed to just a single key. For reference, my main purpose is gaming.

You are correct. it is different with a board. partly due to the mounting and other factors. But you can certainly rule out ones that don't feel nice or ones you like the feel of.
