Medieval II - Just got it and it's ace!

^^ Here is my battle experiences so far.

Form my ranks. Kick start Archers & revel in the sight of falling enemy
Send my Horsemen round for a think I'm clever flanking move.
Get steamed by enemy, my dudes leg it (wimps) then i get massacred. Apparently in a very severe way or so the commentator thinks (******).
Rinse repeat 4 times :p
I am useless at these types of games but the game is just to awesome not to spend time learning a new genre. At my dusty old age it will take 10 years or so but every move is so satisfying i can't wait to be competitive

Not a problem I'm getting and I'm running on a 7950 GTX and 2.3ghz 7600. I have read about a few such problems and I believe it was sorted with a reintsall. I think perhaps some of your TLR files got corrupt along the way.

Uninstall the entire game and DELETE the folder manually if it doesnt by itself and try it again. MTWII, patch 1.2 and then the mod.

Let us know how you get on. It's well worth it.

Sorry for long time in replying, Zefan i guess didnt like my attempt at covering up a sweary lol.

Cheers for the help, seems to have worked though i still get some weird lines on the russia map, will take a pic if you would like to see.

yep go on then lets have a look.

If you want to see awesome cavalry check out the French. They've got the best mounted knights in the western world and believe me, it does make a difference. :D

All I do is line all my infantry up in two, long, thin lines one behind eachother and on guard mode then have my archers behind there with skirmish off, guard mode and fire at will on only until they reach my front wall then I manually aim them. Then finally I have my general right at the back and 1-2 cavalry at one side to swing around the back. The infantry hold them in position whilst I run more infantry / cavalry around the back.

Is there no way I can be roman but start where the scotts start? I don't like starting with loads of cities, I prefer to start with 1 village and build my empire up.

I'm not really sure what i'm building either. I just build everything that increases my tradeable goods and that's basically it. Any tips on what to aim for?

There's loads of ways to form your men, and it very much depends on your units, and the map. I tend to handle it in a similar way myself - heavy infantry on front ranks, although my archers are normally way out in front - to draw the enemy fire. Heavy cavalry out on a flank, out of the way. As soon as the enemy line breaks and attacks I send in the horses. I hit the enemy on both flanks at the same time.

I don't think there's a way to change your starting location (not easily anyway) so why not start out with a smaller faction until you feel confident.

As for what to build - focus on one city and one fortress initially. Build trade in the city, and armaments in the fortress.

i love seiges in the later periods, so much more rewarding when you've had to storm 3 gates, fought you're way through the hordes of archers and dismounted knights on the walls, and you get to use cannons :p :D

Getting to grips with the game now. Playing as scotland and so far taken the whole of the UK from the English. Just starting to get bombards and heavy infantry which is nice so the game is getting more interesting.

Had one of my generals returning back from a crusade and got ambushed:

They had spearmen and crossbowmen. Not sure how I won :p

Currently near the end of my turkish campaign, I don't know if it's me but quite a few of there units seem overpowered. Especially the Janissary musketeers who decimate pretty much anything put infront of them especially the heavy infantry who everyone uses at the end of the game. :p

Are you playing a modified version of the game? The stats for the Long Road are slightly off regards melee troops, so archers and musketeers who might also fight with their secondary weapon have unfair advantages.

Yeah they suck. :p

One of my main cities has just revolted and took itself over and I had to throw a massive army together just to get it back. If only the impatiant buggers would wait a few turns for all the buildings to build to increase their happiness!

Currently the richest faction in the game; can't spend it fast enough with 40k excess at all times :o

Well you all seem to make this game sound like fun, with a lot of you buying it and such.
Did anyone try the demo first and manage to get it to run on vista 32bit, google is not helping me and as soon as I click the desktop icon to run the game I get a "Medieval II suffered a fatal error and will now exit."
Does'nt look like the game even trys to load, I have tried XP compatibility mode but same error, so anyone have the demo running on Vista 32?

I don't wanna buy the full game to be faced with the same problem.

If I remember rightly, I had the same problem with both the demo and the initial release; turns out that dropping my desktop resolution to a non-widescreen format solved it. A later patch resolved the issue, too.

Mind you, this was on XP. Worth a try, though.

Not that I play M2TW any more; it's just too fiddly [Merchants? Pah! What was so broken about economic abstraction?] and half-baked [stretched icons for widescreen? Classy!].

MTW/VI was as good as it got for me. The change from discreet regions, a la Risk, to free-roaming regions was too much for both the AI programmers and my ageing brain :D

I thought I had it then as I am in 1440x900 but dropping it down gives the same error, thanks for the idea though. I would try redownloading the demo but I have such a low GB allowance per month.

EDIT
Seems installing it on a seperate drive to the OS has fixed the problem :)

I'm playing Lands to Conquer, i'm sure they've already been toned down a little from vanilla but there so accurate, when a squad is down to 1 unit, the whole volley hits him.
