Medieval II - Just got it and it's ace!

if anyone wants to make it so that they can play as a turn per year, or per sixth months or per month (or what ever) there is an easy way to do it, makes the game far more enjoyably, but not if you realise you set it to .05 instead of .5 (8000 more turns to go on the wall :p)

Program Files/SEGA/Medieval II Total War/data/world/maps/campaign/imperial_campaign/descr_strat.

This file is the one you need to mod. Open it. You'll notice a section that says;

start_date 1080 summer
end_date 1530 winter
timescale 2.00

Change timescale to 0.50 for turns to last 6 months. You might also want to display years on the campaign map now, rather than the turn counter. In that case, look for the line that says;

show_date_as_turns

Simply put a ; in front of it so it reads;

;show_date_as_turns

Well you all seem to make this game sound like fun, with a lot of you buying it and such.
Did anyone try the demo first and manage to get it to run on vista 32bit, google is not helping me and as soon as I click the desktop icon to run the game I get a "Medieval II suffered a fatal error and will now exit."
Does'nt look like the game even trys to load, I have tried XP compatibility mode but same error, so anyone have the demo running on Vista 32?

I don't wanna buy the full game to be faced with the same problem.

i have it running on vista64 no problems

I tried this when Vista first came out. It loaded ok but some of the screen buttons were blurred. So i reinstalled XP. Not tried since. That was vista32

Just had a rather crazy battle against Egypt, crazy mofos they are! I'm playing as Templar Knights.

As you can see here I am totally feukcd! (Below is not how I started my battle)

To which I thought how can I kill most of them? So I stashed all my guys in my square in defensive mode and hoped they'd just rush at me. Computers suck... Instead they just launched giant balls of fire into my square killing around 50 of my men in around 3 seconds. :mad: So instead I piled all my guys as close to my wall as I could behind the gate. They all stormed through like they should but they were still smashing me with great balls of fire. Crazily enough the trebs were totally miles off their target and luckily hit my general bang in the face. He was the only one to die in my general squad from the hit... Great. So anyway I got pessid off and ran my bodyguards around the whole town, out one of the side gates, and rammed them into all their siege equipment.

Amazingly enough I took them all out! But at the same time I didn't realise my horses were getting pwned by spear men the enemy had retreated. :(

Since I had taken out their entire ranged way of combat I went back to plan A and piled my guys in the square on guard and let them run at me. I also had my archers using fire arrows with fire on will off and I was targeting enemies right at the back to prevent friendly fire in an attempt to make them route. Which they did!

Finally I chased them all down and sliced their throats, drank their blood and excreted in their mouths.

Damn Egyptians think they rule the damn world!

One turn after my epic battle I immediately rounded up some reinforcements as those pesky kids were about to siege me again. I sent my best troops to my city and got ambushed by more Egyptians on the way. I thought fcuk (Yes, the designer label not the curse!) this and assaulted them. To my surprise was on a cliff side.

They had ranged combat and I did not. I couldn't attack or move so I had to quit the battle to which I lost almost my entire army. Great.

you think they'd have fixed that kind of thing by now, it's been the most disapointing aspect of the whole series, hilly battles look ********.

edit: am'a go play this now :D

if anyone wants an online multiplayer game sometime...

Indeed they do. It looks like they're going through a time warp, all stretched and weird looking. :(

Another ambush by the Egyptians but this time it was a night attack. Strangely enough because they chose night attack it cut their 1000man army out of the battle and left them with 400 men against my 1000. So I totally destroyed them with my cavalry and got greeted with this:

The faction leader of my enemy, 10.5k gold... I killed him. :D

All I know is that English Longbow men can use them. Not sure which other factions have them but you have to set them in battle deployment as their special action. During battle they can only use fire arrows.

Just had another huge battle with Egypt, they had 6 generals aswell as almost 1.6k men. I had 800 :/ Just as I thought i'd won and all my units were practically dead of fatigue another two full, eager, fresh squads of spear men along with some catapults and ballistas would launch at me :(

The final 10minutes of the battle were slow as I cleaned up but here was the main battle

I admit a lot of the dead are mine :p

I did get another 4k ransom for their prisoners but instead I executed them all. :)

thanks mate, reason i ask is i was assualting a castle, and they had an aweful lot of horse men, my polish nobles on foot were quickly thrown into the fray to act as impromtue stakes :p

I've got some serious squalor problems and religious unrest in almost all my cities... I've got priests in them all, sizeable armies and all tax on low just to keep them happy about 100%. Still raking in a hefty profit but I'm not getting time to improve my army as all turns are taken by increasing happiness :(

cant say i generally have a problem with civil unrest or bad conditions, and i usually have a big enough army for the jobs at hand, sometimes foreign diplomats/princesses can cause trouble.

while playing my english campaign i am currently allied with the scots (after a long, bloody drawn out campaign) however, one of their princesses is hanging around dublin, which, until she was there was a perfectly happy town.

sometimes to much military can also be a problem, there is a very fine balance

Yeah being utterly useless in this game I always run into this problem later on in the game.

I'm handling it fine it's just a inconvenience. :(

Thinking of attacking an enemy with a crap load of siege, totally knacking as many buildings in their base as possible then just routing myself? Would I lose my men or would it be just like a retreat?

Thankfully I started a crusade against the Egyptians a while ago and now the Danish have just brought two full armies which should stop Egypt attacking me for about 2 turns. The Danish appear and I was all happy then the next turn both their armies were practically gone :D

Edit:

zomg :( They came from nowhere :(
